'Unity helped defeat terrorism'

Innocent people had suffered enough through the LTTE terror campaign my name and the name of other party members too were listed in their 'killer list'.

We then decided to join up with President Mahinda Rajapaksa and support the war effort irrespective of party considerations, said Construction and Engineering Services Minister Rajitha Senarathne.

He was speaking at a pensioners meeting held at the Kalutara Town Hall premises recently. He said about 17 UNP MPs had left the party to support the UPFA Governments effort to destroy the LTTE.

With the help of the masses and the youth of the country we were able to end this three decades old conflict.

The All Island Pensioners Society Secretary A. Vidana Pathirana stated that there were about 450,000 pensioners in the country but only a small number had joined the association.

He appealed to all pensioners to join the association so that the rights and privileges could be protected. President of the Association MP Perera also addressed the gathering.
