Dengue shramadana ends in tragedy

A teacher participating in a shramadana campaign to control dengue at Pujapiitya National School succumbed to his injuries when a part of the roof collapsed on him.

The victim was K.G. Keerthiratne, a teacher of Batugoda, Pujapitiya in Kandy. The teacher was participating in the dengue eradication campaign as his son is a student at this school. Keeerthiratne who was seriously injured, was immediately rushed to the Peradeniya Teaching hospital where he died.


Clash closes two faculties of Sabaragamuwa University

Two faculties of the Sabaragamuwa University were closed indefinitely following a clash between two student groups yesterday morning.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekera said a clash between two groups of students from Management Studies and Applied Sciences took place inside the Sabaragamuwa University in the morning.

Both faculties were closed indefinitely until further notice.


'Sri Lanka we are one' launch on Wednesday

A ceremony to launch the song Sri Lanka We are one will be held at the main ballroom of the Water's Edge on June 17, 2009 (Wednesday) from 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m.

Over 50 musicians have got together and volunteered their services to create this song which conveys the message to the world that Sri Lanka is One Nation, One People, One Land.


Weerawansa appeals to SC

Colombo District MP Wimal Weerawansa yesterday appealed to the Supreme Court against an interim injunction order of the Colombo Commercial High Court that prevented him from publishing his book Neththa Wenuwata Eththa. The appellant petitioner stated that the Colombo Commercial High Court had issued the interim order on May 27 until the final determination of his appeal from the Colombo District Court.

MP Weerawansa cited JVP Leader Somawansa Amarasinghe as the respondent. The appellant stated that the order of the Colombo Commercial High Court was misconceived in law and sought to set aside the same.


World Day to Combat Desertification

The Saviya Development Foundation has organized a community environment awareness workshop and a prize awarding ceremony to award prizes to the winners of the Art/Posters Competition. To Commemorate International Desertification Prevention Day, in cooperation with the National Science Foundation and all Mass Media Institutes.

This will be held at the No. 02 Hall of the Galle Municipal Council at 10 p.m. on June 17.


Program to prevent mosquito breeding

A series of programs have been launched under the guidance of the National Institute of Health Sciences, Kalutara in Kalutara district to eliminate the mosquito breeding places.

R. J. Singhabahu (PHI) has issued instructions to Public Health Inspectors to personally inspect the places where the mosquitoes breed.

They have distributed hand-bills to educate and destroy the mosquito breeding places and to keep the home gardens clean and tidy.


Literary evening

A literary evening with three authors and their works will be held on Thursday, June 18 at 5.30 p.m. at the ICES 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8.

Punyakante Wijenaike on her latest book “That Deep Silence”, Jolly Somasundram on “Macbeth Daggers” and Vihanga Perera on “Stable Horses” will speak about their books.


Commemorative Pinkama

A commemorative Pinkama to mark the 96th birth anniversary of late Ven. Madihe Pannasiha Mahanayaka Thera and transfer merit on departed war heroes will be held at the Vajiraramaya, Bambalapitiya on June 21 at 6.30 p.m. The Pinkama held under the patronage of Ven. Kotapola Amarakitti Thera will include a special Bodhipooja and a dhammadesana, said a spokesman for the Vajirarama Karya Sadhaka Sabha.

Buddhist discussion

The next Buddhist English public panel discussion of the Colombo YMBA will be on Sunday 21st June at 10.00 a.m. at its Borella building on “Buddhist Attitude to Crime.” The Panellists are Prof. Oliver Abeynayake and Dr. Kosala de Silva with Rajah Kuruppu as Moderator.


Badi ud Din Mahmood commemoration day

The SLBC Muslim Service has organised commemoration day of former Education Minister Dr. Badi ud Din Mahmood and releasing a set of CDs consisting of important speeches made by Dr. Badi ud Din Mahmood during his life will be held on June 17, 2009 at 9.45 a.m. at the SLBC. It will be held under the patronage of the SLBC Chairman Hudson Samarasinghe.

Jamiah Naleemiya Director Dr. M. A. M. Shukry will deliver memorial oration. SLBC Muslim service will broadcast live from 10.00 a.m. over the Muslim Service. Director of the Muslim Service M. Z. Ahmed Munawwar will present the proceedings.


Lecture on S & T

Dr. M. W. Chandre Dharmawardene, BSc (Ceylon); Ph D (Cantab), who has been working at the National Research Council in Ottawa, Canada will deliver a scientific lecture on “The Impact of Science and Technology in the 21st Century - the Sri Lankan Context” on June 20 at 10.30 a.m. at the PPGL Siriwardene Auditorium at the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon headquarters (Adamantane House), 341/22, Kotte Road, Welikada, Rajagiriya.


Int’l Co-op day

The 87th international Co-operative Day ceremonies will be held on July 4 at Madampe Co-operative Society conference hall under the patronage of Trade, Marketing, Development, Co-operatives and Consumer Services Minister Bandula Gunawardena.

The theme of the 87th co-operative day is to uplift the living standards of the consumers and how to face the globlisation in future.


Man takes poison after killing wife

A father of three who allegedly consumed poison after killing his wife by slicing her neck with a knife was arrested by the Panwila Police yesterday.

Police said the suspect who was in a critical condition is warded at the Kandy Teaching Hospital under police guard. Investigations revealed that the suspect had killed his wife because he suspected her to be having an illicit love affair with another man.

The alleged paramour is also warded in hospital after a failed attempt to end his life by drinking poison.


Death of ex-Uva PC Minister

The ex-Uva PC Minister of Cultural Affairs and Co-operative Development Katugaha Ratnayake passed away yesterday at the Intensive Care Unit of the Badulla Base Hospital. He was 82. The cremation will take place on June 17 at the Watabedda Playground, Maliththa Bandarawela.

Katugaha Ratnayake was a famous poet, a senior SLFP member and a dedicated social worker.


Bogus job agency raided

Kandy police raided a bogus job agency operated in a palatial house at Kudarathwatte Mawatha, Dodamwala and arrested four suspects including a woman. Police investigations have revealed that this house had belonged to a top official in the Navy and the suspects had allegedly rented it to operate the agency. It is also alleged that the suspects had cheated several prospective job seekers by millions promising them foreign jobs.

These suspects are from Muruthalawa, Kottawa and Hanguranketa.
