New Archbishop

Pope Benedict XVI has appointed Archbishop Dr. Malcolm Ranjith as the New Archbishop of Colombo, said a special communique of the Apostolic Nunciature in Sri Lanka.

Archbishop Oswald Gomis has tendered his resignation upon reaching retirement age.


Murder of student Suspect in Court

A father of four arrested by Mihintale Police in connection with the alleged sexual abuse and murder of Harshanika Lakshani Gunaratne, a six-year-old girl of Netiyagama will be produced before Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Ruchira Weliwatta today.

The suspect Kiribandage Ratnapala of Netiyagama is warded at the Anuradhapura Hospital under prison guard.


Two females in ‘fowl play’

Alawwa police arrested two women in connection with the robbery of 1,880 fowls from a poultry farm in Boyawalana in the Alawwa police area. The fowls are valued at nearly Rs. 500,000, police said.

The two women were produced before the Warakapola Magistrate Court in this connection and released on Rs. 500,000 bail.


Ceremony to honour President, Service Chiefs

A ceremony to pay tribute to the President, Defence Secretary, Security Forces Chiefs, IGP and Civil Defence Force Director General in recognition of their services towards eradicating the terrorist menace organised by former parliamentarian K.B. Lilantha Perera will be held near the K.B. Christie Perera statue at K.B. Christie Perera Mawatha, Colombo 13 on June 20 at 10 a.m.


Mihindu perahera

The annual Mihindu perahera of Narammala Vidyarthalankara temple, Dampelessa, will be held on June 19.

The perahera will leave Vidyarthalankara temple at 8 p.m. will parade Narammala town and reach Prawachanalankara temple Narammala at midnight.


Krishnamurthi talk

A recorded public talk on ‘Is it possible to live in peace?’ delivered by the late Indian sage J. Krishnamurti will be replayed at the Public Library Auditorium, Colombo 7 on Sunday, June 21 at 10.30 a.m.

The event is organised by the Krishnamurti Centre, Sri Lanka Inc.


OBA to felicitate war heroes

The ‘96 Group of the Old Boys’ Association of Kalutara Vidyalaya will organize a ceremony to felicitate war heroes who are old boys of Kalutara Vidyalaya, both those in service, disabled, departed or retired members the Army, the Navy, the Air Force and the Civil Defence Force to protect sovereignty of Sri Lanka.

The old boys who served and are serving in the Forces are serving requested to forward their particulars including their name, rank, unit, phone numbers, private and official addresses before June 25 to Nuwan Prabath Silva, No. 69, Kaleel Place, Katukurunda, Kalutara. Family mass

Student dies of dengue

Meanwhile, a 13-year old girl attached to the Gelioya Pannaratana Vidyalaya died of dengue fever on Monday bringing the total number of dengue deaths in Kandy district to 23.

She was identified as Kawmini Narthana Dassanayake, a Grade 8 student.
