Over 6,000 dengue breeding places in Colombo
The Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry last month launched a massive
program to combat dengue in 68 divisional secretariat divisions with the
patronage of MOH offices, PHIs and Civil Defence Committees. Under this
program, in Colombo district alone 23,100 houses were inspected and
6,138 of them were found to be mosquito breeding places.
These places included factories, school premises, partly built
constructions, concrete roofs and abandoned lands.
The owners of these premises were given a two week deadline to
destroy these mosquito breeding places. The Health Ministry has
instructed MOH Offices to take legal action against these householders
who fail to heed the deadline given by the Public Health Inspectors in
these areas. Health Authorities have already issued notice on 283
persons outside Colombo Municipal Area who had mosquito breeding
premises.
