More vehicles for Northern Local bodies

Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon has taken steps to enhance the fleet of vehicles for daily needs in 34 local bodies in the North.

Under this program, two-wheel tractors will be provided to the four municipalities and 13 Pradeshiya Sabhas in Jaffna district, three Pradeshiya Sabhas in Kilinochchi district,four Pradeshiya Sabhas in Mannar district including the Mannar Municipality, five Pradeshiya Sabhas in Mullaitivu district and four Pradeshiya Sabhas in Vavuniya including the Vavuniya Municipality. Commenting on the shortage of transport facilities, especially in local government institutions in the North, Minister Tennakoon told the Daily News that the administration process throughout the district had collapsed during the last three decades due to terrorist activities.

A massive development drive launched by the Government in the North under the Uthuru Vasanthaya accelerated development program will strengthen the capability of backward local bodies and uplift their state, the Minister added.
