Cigarette dealer fined
Panadura Group Corr.
Panadura Magistrate Thushara Rajasinghe imposed a fine of Rs.
40,000.00 on a trader in Keselwatta, Panadura who pleaded guilty of
possessing and selling imported unauthorised cigarettes.
Police Sergeant Geekeeyanage of Panadura North Police produced the
suspect before Court.
Moragoda to attend legal confab
Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda will lead Sri
Lanka’s delegation to the 57th session of the Asian-African legal
Consultative Organization, which will convene in Putrajaya, Malaysia
this week.
The delegation will include Solicitor General W.P.G. Dep, PC.
The AALCO was founded in 1955 following the birth of the Non-aligned
Movement, on the proposal of Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.
The aim of the Organization is to assist countries in asia and Africa
to co-ordinate and assert their views on the formation of rules of
international law.
The Organization has played that important role in major
international conferences such as those dealing with the Law of
Treaties, the Law of the Sea, protection of the environment, refugees
and internally displaced persons.
Prize-giving of “The Light of Asia” contest
The prize-giving of the annual “Light of Asia” Contest conducted by
the YMBA Colombo will be held on Saturday August 22 at 3 p.m. at the
YMBA Main Hall, Borella.
The chief guest on this occasion, Prof. Narada Warnasuriya, Prof. of
Paediatrics, Faculty of Medical Sciences, University of Sri
Jayawardenapura will give away the prizes.

Kegalle Zonal Education Authorities has selected Kegalle Swarna
Jayanthi Maha Vidyalaya to be developed as a well-equipped modern
school.
Terrorist hit roads renovated

Rural roadways abandoned owing to the terrorist attacks are being
renovated and opened for use in Anuradhapura district.
Arrangements have been made to commission the Maha Wilachchiya
Silawathurai road which is 35 kilometers in length.
The Chief Minister speaking to the Daily News said:
“The re-settlement of displaced people in Silawathurai area is now
going on.
Water supply scheme

A new pipe borne water supply scheme for the upper division office of
the Wanaraja Estate at Dickoya in the Ambagamuwa (Ginigathena) DS
Division in the Nuwara Eliya district will be implemented by the
Ambagamuwa Divisional Secretariat.

Youth found dead
Kegalle special corr.
A 28 year old youth H. B. Aruna Nisantha Kumara from Pitihuma in the
neighbourhood of Kegalle town was found dead below a rock in “Kurulu
Kelle” closer to his home in the same neighbourhood. It was reported
Aruna Nisantha Kumara was flying a kite at about 4 p.m. on August 12,
near “Kurulu Kelle” but he had not come back home even after 9 o’ clock
in the night. The worried parents in the night itself with neighbours
set-forth in search of the disappeared youth. The searching party came
across the body of the youth Aruna Nisantha Kumara lying sprawling his
hands and feet in the jungle ground.
Police suspect of foul-play and investigations are to be continued.
SLAMAC silver jubilee
The Sri Lanka Malay Confederation, the umbrella body for 23
affiliated Malay Associations in Sri Lanka will be celebrating its
silver jubilee today, August 18 at Salon Lilac, Galadari Hotel from 6 pm

NWP Council to solve teachers' problems

The North Western Provincial Council has decided to conduct mobile
service programs at electoral level to give solutions to the problems of
Government school teachers in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts of
the NWP.
These mobile service programs will be conducted with the
participation of school principals, Divisional Directors of Education
and Zonal Directors of Education.
All school teachers have been requested to put forward their problems
with regard to their promotions, transfers, salary anomalies and
receiving due grades in writing to the Chief Minister through their
respective principals.
32 mobile service programs are planned to be held during this year. A
sum of Rs. 1.5 million has been allocated for the cause. |
