Asoka Weeraratna's 10th death anniversary
The German Dharmaduta Society and Mitirigala Nissarana Vanaya
Sanrakshana Mandalaya will jointly commemorating the 10th death
anniversary of Asoka Weeraratna (Ven. Mitirigala Dhammanisanthi Thera),
the founder of the German Dharmaduta Society and the Mitirigala Forest
Hermitage, at a special pinkama at the newly constructed Meditation Hall
at the Mitirigala Forest Hermitage on Binara Poya Day today from 2 to 4
p.m.
Ven. U. Dhammajiva Thera, the Chief incumbent of the Mitirigala
Nissarana Vanaya Aranya will deliver a commemorative Dhamma Deshana.
Treasure hunters nabbed

Eighteen suspects including two women were taken into custody by
Wellawa Police while they were digging the Prajagala Temple premises for
a hidden treasure in the Arankelle historic and sacred site.
Police also seized a vehicle and implements used by the gang for
treasure hunting.

The official despatch of school text books
meant for distribution among students next year took place at a
ceremony presided by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha at
the Orugodawatta Stores Complex yesterday. Here Commissioner

Ex ANCL staffer dies
Anthony Basil Fernando who served in the Internal Audit Department of
ANCL for more than 30 years has passed away after a brief illness. His
remains are lying at No. 71/3, Anderson Road, Negombo. Cortege leaves
residence at 4 p.m. for burial at Vellaveediya General Cemetery on
Saturday, September 5.
ANCL ex-Working Director’s mother dies
S. Gamlath Arachchi of Ganemulla, mother of ex-Working Director of
Lake House, D.K. Somasiri has passed away.
Her remains will be lying at No. 231, Kandana Road, Ganemulla,
Gampaha.
Funeral takes place on Saturday (5) at 6 pm at Gampaha, Kasagahawatta
Cemetery.
Two elders hacked to death
A husband and wife in Embilipitiya were found hacked to death in a
house at Hospital road Embilipitiya by the Embilipitiya police on
Tuesday.
The deceased were identified as W.W. Jayaweera (72) and his wife R.
Karunawathie (64).
The bodies were found following information given by the couple’s
daughter W.W. Manel.
Initial investigations revealed that the couple had earned a living
by engaging in a private money lending and mortgage business.
SLAF wins productivity award

Sri Lanka Air Force was placed first at the recently concluded
Western Province Provincial Productivity Awards 2008, in the inter
department category.
Air Force spokesman Wing Commander Janaka Nanayakkara said this was a
testament to the SLAF mission of being a rigid enterprise which takes
pride in developing their core capabilities to ensure readiness and
success in utilizing the competent human resources and technology
available.
“It strengthens the visionary outlook of the SLAF and reinforces its
goal to become well accomplished to defend the independence and
territorial integrity of the nation”, he added.
He said the latest achievement follows the success of previous years
when it received the National Productivity Awards, (Government
Category), Sri Lanka National Quality Award for Excellence in 1996.

The get-together of “University Friends” of the 1981 batch of
graduates of the Physical Science Faculty, University of Kelaniya to
mark the 25th anniversary of the graduation will be held at Paradise

UNDP help develop Gal-oya valley
Mahaweli Systems corr.
The UN agency specialized in development work in developing countries
will help the Environment Conservation and Economic Development
Organization to renovate the Kudawewa rural reservoir of the
Deeghavaapee colony through the project.
After completing the project, around 75 acres of paddy fields will be
cultivated. Kudawewa feeds only about 20 acres of paddy fields at
present.

K.T. Nissanka of 52/12 Rahula Road, Matara is suffering from acute
myeloid leukaemia. Nissanka’s mother K.P. Piyaseeli says he needs Rs.
52,500 monthly for his treatment to keep him alive. She says her family
is unable to foot this bill due to their present financial plight. She
requests philanthropists and the public to help her sons cause by
