Dudley Senanayake MV take under 14 rugby title

Dudley Senanayake Maha Vidyalaya, Narahenpita the last year’s Bowl champs came up with a stupendous performance to beat the vastly improved Dharmapala Vidyalaya, Pannipitiya in the Cup Final of the under 14 all island division two, 10-a-side rugby tournament by 14 points (two goals) to nil, played at the Seevali grounds, Ratnapura yesterday.

The Dudley Senanayake lads played superb rugby right throughout the tournament and beat all the teams whom they confronted comfortably.

Their skipper Dananajaya Sandaruwan was a source of inspiration to his team mates with his fiery loose play and scored a try under the posts in the 4th minute. He was followed by his team mate, centre S. Madushanka who barged over for a try under the posts in the seventh minute. There was no scoring from either side after half time.

The Plate Trophy was won by St. Sebastian’s College, Kandana who beat D. B. Welagedera Maha Vidyalaya, Kurunegala 12 points to nil while the Bowl Trophy was won by Nugawela Central, Kandy five-nil during extra time by beating Sri Rahula College, Kandy.

More than 300 participants from 24 schools took part in this grand finale.

This tournament was organised by the Sri Lanka Schools Rugby Football Association (SLSRFA) and sponsored by Nestle Lanka Ltd.

The chief guest was the Governor, Sabaragamuwa Province, Janaka Priyantha Bandara, while the guest of honour was Dr. K. A. D. Punyadasa (President, SLSRFA).

The final was officiated by Asela Muthumala.
