Lanka in five wicket win over Windies

Sri Lanka scored a morale boosting five wicket win over West Indies in their last warm up match of the Champions Trophy played at Pretoria, South Africa yesterday. The West Indies winning the toss opted to bat first and were well placed at one stage at 121 for two wickets but with the introduction of spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and Ajantha Mendis wickets fell at regular intervals and lost their last eight wickets for 80 runs to be all out for 201 runs in 45.1 overs.

Opener D.M. Richards scored a hard hit 59 in 60 deliveries with 10 fours and two sixes before he was bowled by Lasith Malinga while Devon Smith made a well compiled 67 in 102 bowels inclusive of six boundaries before he was caught by Sangakkara off the bowling of Malinga. But the other batsmen could not cope with the bowling of the spin duo Muralitharan (3 for 17) and Ajantha Mendis (3 for 31) as the Windies folded up for 201.

Sri Lanka were off to a disastrous start losing the wickets of Tillekeratne Dilshan (3) and Sanath Jayasuriya (21) to the bowling of paceman Darren Sammy before skipper Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardena steadied the innings with a third wicket stand of 44 runs before Sangakkara departed for 35.

Then Jayawardena was involved in another useful partnership of 63 runs for the fifth wicket with Thilina Kandamby before he fell hit wicket to Tonge for a well compiled 67 in 93 deliveries inclusive of six boundaries.
