Newborn’s body in abandoned well

The body of a newborn infant was found in an abandoned well in
Wegapitiya, Balangoda on Tuesday by the Balangoda Police. Balangoda
Magistrate Namal Balalla who held the inquiry into the death directed
police to send the body to the Ratnapura Hospital for further
investigations.
Police said the baby would have been two or three days old.
Computer centres for Eastern schools

The Education Ministry has taken measures to set up 45 computer
centres at schools under the purview of the Eastern Provincial Council.
This program will be implemented to set up 1,000 computer learning
centres countrywide.
Rewards for outstanding policemen

Nearly 1,500 police officials who had helped to successfully raid
illicit drugs and anti-narcotics operations under the Mathata Thitha
program received Rs. 8.70 million from the Police Rewards Fund as
rewards.
These officers are attached to 20 police stations in the Kandy Police
Division and other special operations units.
Student mobile phone thieves nabbed

A six member gang including two students of a popular Dambulla school
responsible for breaking into a mobile telephone outlet in Dambulla
twice was arrested by officers of the Matale Crimes Unit yesterday.
Police said investigations revealed that the gang had robbed a large
number of mobile phones and prepaid cards from this outlet during the
two burglaries. The two student suspects are due to sit the G.C.E.
Ordinary Level examination this year.
Tank to be renovated

The Agrarian Services Department has taken action to renovate the
Kalundewa Unapanduruyaya tank in Dambulla. Over 150 acres can be
irrigated under this tank in both seasons after completion.
The cost is estimated at Rs. 1.7 million.
Farmers' week
The Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Ministry will hold
the National Farmers' week this year from October 11 to 16. 125
awareness programs will be conducted during the week to educate farmers
on the use of carbonic manure instead of chemical fertilizer and 12,500
farmers of the Kurunegala District will be educated.
The Agriculture and Agrarian Services Department will give away
agricultural equipment worth Rs. 5.5 million among 400 farmers in the
Kurunegala District.
Suspect in cheating case remanded

Colombo Fort Additional Magistrate Ruwan Dissanayake yesterday
further remanded Nirosha Ashantha Amadoru, who is alleged to have
cheated a leading travel firm in Sri Lanka, for a sum over Rs. 9.3
million by way of issuing air tickets on a forged documents till
September 29.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) producing the suspect
told court earlier that the suspect was arrested at the Bandaranaike
International Airport (BIA) while he was attempting to leave the country
after committing the alleged fraud.
The Additional Magistrate directed the CID to submit a comprehensive
report in connection with their ongoing investigations into the fraud on
the next date. The case will be called again on September 29.

The Annual General Meeting of the Peoples Movement for the Rights of
Patients (PMRP) will be held on Saturday, September 26 from 9 a.m. to 12
noon at the CSR hall (Fatima Church premises) 281, Deans Road, Maradana.
The keynote talk will be given by Asia Pacific Coordinator for Health
Action International and a patron of the PMRP Dr. K. Balasubramaniam. He
will focus on how to obtain quality drugs and nutritious foods at
affordable prices. Former Dean of the Medical Faculty and another patron
of the movement Professor Carlo Fonseka will also speak.
Monthly lecture
The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be
held at 5 p.m. on Monday, September 28 at the Gamini Dissanayake
Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha,
Colombo 07. The title of the lecture is "Buddhist Ecclesiastical Law"
presented by Dr. Wickrama Weerasooria. The lecture is open to the
