In the penultimate day of the ITF Junior Circuit (Week 2) tennis
tournament at the SLTA Courts yesterday, much was expected in the Girl’s
Singles Finals between the Comparatively physically well built Indian,
D. Mandava and the equally smart though diminutive Sri Lankan Amreetha
Muttiah.
But play in the match did not rise up to the occasion to befit that
of a final, with Mandava easily winning the match in straight sets at
6/1, 6/3 and the title as well.
Tall as she was, Mandava was able to cover the Court swiftly with
long strides and with her outstretched reach she did have the district
advantage to keep leading four games to 1 in the first set. Both served
and drove strongly, but with Mandava’s returns with good length and
height and deftly lobbying the ball as well had the better of Amreetha
for Mandava to take the set at 6/1.
Amreetha did show fight in the second set to have won three games,
but with Mandava sending the ball down at different trajectories caused
Amreetha to err.
In the frequent rallies Amreetha lacked patience to play fair number
of shots to get an opening and kept hitting the net or sending the ball
out - all of which led to Mandava taking the set at 6/3, to win the
match in straights sets and the final.
In the girls doubles finals the combination of Sohinee Gosh (MRi) and
Parmindar Kaur of India, were up against a determined pair in Sajjad and
Handa of India, to the extent that Gosh and Kaur were so stretched, that
they had to give of their best before winning the doubles title at 6/4,
6/4.
The boys singles finals between Korean C.H. Woo and Sri Lankan T.
Dineshkanthan takes place this morning.
