President to open war heroes village

The Ranaviru Nagaraya (War heroes city) at Ippologama in Anuradhapura
district will be opened by President Mahinda Rajapaksa on November 22.
The Ranaviru Nagaraya consisting 1,509 housing units has hospitals,
schools and kindergartens, cooperative shops, community centres,
electricity, drinking water supply and a permanent road network within
the city.
The war heroes city has been constructed on the instructions of the
President as a tribute to war heroes.
ARWC on Nov. 6
The Asian Regional Working Conference (ARWC) on Women and Water will
be held from November 6 to 8 at the Hotel Club Palm Bay in Marawila.
The chief guest on this occasion will be Executive Director of
Nederlandse Vrouwenraad and President of the Women for Water Partnership
Dr. Alice Bouman Dentener. The Women for Water Partnership is a
worldwide movement of 18 major women's umbrella organizations in South
America, Africa, Asia and Europe. Over 130 international and Sri Lankan
delegates are scheduled to participate at the Asian Regional Working
Conference on Women and Water.
Child dies after drinking surgical spirits

A three and a half year old child who had accidentally drunk some
surgical spirits died after admission to the Kandy General Hospital
yesterday.
The child from a family of Nawalapitiya had drunk the spirits on
Tuesday night and was admitted to the hospital in a serious condition.
Kandy Hospital Police OIC Sub Inspector W.M. Navaratna Banda was
conducting investigations.
Public seminar
The Trade Finance Association of Bankers (TFAB) has organized a
public seminar on ‘Increasing Opportunities in International Trade - Are
You Risk Covered?’ to be held from 8.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m. on Wednesday,
November 14 at Grand Ballroom, Galadari Hotel, Colombo 1.
Exhibition
A photography competition and exhibition organized by the Ceylon
Bible Society on November 19 and 20. The theme for the exhibition is
‘Light upon our community life’ and is open to all Sri Lankan citizens

IT centre
An Information Technology Centre for the benefit of visually
handicapped undergraduates will be opened at the Colombo University at
9.00 a.m. today, November 5.
This centre set up under a program sponsored by the Kollupitiya
Leonard Cheshire Disability Centre will provide facilities for visually
handicapped students to study computer technology from the initial stage
and master microsoft office packages, internet use, website creation and
Data-filing management. The facility open to undergraduates at the
Colombo Campus initially will be extended to external visually
handicapped students as well later.
Change of service venue
The venue for the service of ‘Praise and Worship’ conducted every
second Sunday of the month at the Cathedral of Christ the Living Saviour,
has been changed for this month only and will be held this Sunday,
November 8 at 10.30 a.m. at St. Luke’s Church, Borella (opposite
Aquinas), Maradana Road. The speaker and minister will be Dr. Vijaya
Corea.
Book launch
The Purawalar Puthaka Poonga has organised a book launch where four
books will be released on Sunday, November 8 at 4.30 p.m. at the Tamil
Sangam Auditorium, Colombo 6.
Special prayers
The Marathady Thaika Mosque at Clifton Lane, Colombo 9 has organised.
Thowba and Baiaath to be held on Friday November 6 after Mahgrib
Prayers at the Mosque. Supreme Head of Aroossiyyathul Quadhiriyyah.
World Sufistic Order Dr. Thaika Shuaib Alim will conduct the Thowba
and Baiaath.
Batch Night
The 12th Annual General Meeting and the Batch Night of ‘90/95 Old
Boys Group of Prince of Wales’ College, Moratuwa will be held on
November 7 at the Janaka Reception Hall, Horethuduwa, Moratuwa. The AGM
will be at 5.30 p.m.

Commissioner P.B. Abeykoon states that the Australian Government is
exploring the possibility of recruiting, unskilled labour from Sri Lanka
among other countries. There has been no decision as to the numbers to
