Minister Vitarana meets Tamil diaspora

Science and Technology Minister and chairperson of All Party Representatives Committee (APRC) Prof. Tissa Vitarana recently met representatives of the Tamil diaspora in England.

Both sides had detailed discussions on the progress made by the government to provide basic facilities to the Internally Displaced People in centres and their rehabilitation and resettlement.

Minister Prof. Tissa Vitarana also held similar meetings in Paris with Tamil representatives and in the House of Parliament which were organized by the All Party Reconciliation for Sri Lanka Council.


Water interruption

In view of the disruption of power supply arising out of urgent maintenance work by the Ceylon Electricity Board, Water Supply from Ambatale station to the following areas will be interrupted on Sunday November 8 between 8.00 a.m. and 8.00 p.m.

Colombo Municipal Council Limit, Peliyagoda Urban Council area, Wattala-Mabola Urban Council area, Ja-Ela Urban Council and Pradeshiya Sabha areas, Kelaniya Pradehsiya Sabha area, Wattala Pradeshiya Sabha area, Mahara Pradeshiya Sabha area, Dompe Pradehsiya Sabha area, Biyagama Pradehsiya Sabha and Biyagama Export Promotion Zone area, Areas around Dekatana and Malwana Kesbewa Pradehsiya Sabha area, Boralesgamuwa Urban Council area, Maharagama Municipal Council area, Kotte Municipal Council area, Kolonnawa Municipal Council area, Kotikawatte and Mulleriyawa Pradeshiya Sabha areas, Dehiwala-Mt. Lavinia Municipal Council area, Kaldemulla, Soyasapura and Thelawala areas in Moratuwa Municipal Council limit and Battaramulla, Hokandara and Malabe areas in Kaduwela Pradeshiya Sabha limit.


Commemoration

A ceremony to commemorate late Deputy Speaker and Lands Deputy Minister D.A. Rajapaksa will be held at Tangalle Town Hall on November 7 at 9.30 a.m.

The certificates and the prizes to the winners of D.A. Rajapaksa Memorial Oratory Competition and essay competition will be given away at the event.


Kalyana Ranga

Kalyana Ranga - 2009 a cultural show organised by the Sri Lanka-India Cultural Association of the Central Province (Kalyana SLICA) will be held on Sunday, November 15, at 4.15 p.m. at the Hindu Cultural Auditorium, Peradeniya Road, Kandy.


School projects inaugurated

Several new development projects completed at the Kelaniya Sri Dharmaloka Vidyalaya under a program costing Rs. 3.2 million jointly sponsored by the schools Junior OBA and Development Society will be opened by Sports and Public Recreation Minister Gamini Lokuge at a ceremony held under the patronage of Ven. Welamitiyawe Kusaladhamma Chief Sanghanayake Thera on November 6 at 9.30 p.m.


ANCL Colombo-Kataragama bus service again

ANCL will commence its semi-luxury bus service from Colombo to Kataragama from November 18 to mark the fourth anniversary of the assumption of office by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.


Aesthetic graduates as teachers

The Education Ministry has decided to grant teaching appointments to Aesthetic graduates who have followed art, drama, dancing, music and performing arts in their course of studies. The gazette notification to recruit 3,174 graduates of this category will be out in the course of next week, a press release from the Education Ministry said.


Over 47 injured in bus mishap

Over 47 passengers were injured when a bus bound to Bulathkohupitiya from Kegalle plunged into a precipice at Kambagamuwa yesterday evening.

According to Police spokesman senior DIG Nimal Mediwaka 11 passengers with serious injuries were admitted to the Kandy and Kegalle General Hospitals while 36 passengers who sustained minor injuries were admitted to the Kambagamuwa District Hospital. DIG Mediwaka said the mishap occurred owing to the negligence of the driver who was arrested by Police.


Members of the Adivasi Community led by Uruwarige Wanniyelaeththo inspecting the wasp nests in the Sigiriya rock fortress during an inspection tour undertaken at the request of Cultural Affairs Minister Piyasiri Wijenayake recently. Visitors to Sigiriya including tourists had come under constant wasp attacks recently. The Adivasi Community has pledged to eradicate this threat by removing the wasp nests from Sigiriya in stages.


Sri Lanka Institute of Marketing (SLIM) held the brand name awards ceremony at the Waters’ Edge, Battaramulla Wednesday. Munchee Biscuits received the best brand award from Disaster Management and Human Rights Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe who was the chief guest.
