The star rating of Compact Fluorescent (CFL) bulbs for their energy
efficiency will be made compulsory from January next year, Sri Lanka
Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA) official told the Daily News.
Around 40 importers who import CFL bulbs to Sri Lanka are required to
apply for the energy efficiency rating of CFL bulbs under the new
regulations gazetted by Power and Energy Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne.
Although the gazette was published in July, the regulations would
come into force after a grace period in January next year, the official
said.
"These star ratings are displayed prominently along with the rated
wattage and the energy consumption per month on a label," he added.
The official said that around 13 million bulbs are annually imported
into the country. "We are saving around nine million rupees annually
converting to the CFL bulbs," he said. The official added that the SLSEA
would randomly check the samples for their conformity of the rating
assigned by the Sri Lanka Standard Institute (SLSI).
