Phone tapper of a different kind

A suspect who tampered with a telephone booth in Chilaw and retrieved five-rupee coins using a special tool was arrested by the Chilaw police.

Chilaw police arrested the suspect near a telephone booth.

The suspect from Puttalam had confessed to having committed similar thefts in other areas too. Investigations are continuing.


Farmer chopped to death

Gamage Ariyadasa (43), a farmer in Athuraliya, Akuressa was chopped to death by unidentified persons while he was returing from his field in the evening after work.

Akuressa police are investigating.


Echo scanning unit closed

Patients attached to Horana Base Hospital allege that the Echo Scanning Unit at this hospital has been closed down for more than four months as specialist doctor is not available.

This Echo Scanning Unit was donated to the hospital in February this year.


Courts - Registrar nabbed

Bribery Sleuths arrested the Registrar of the Ampara District\Magistrate's Courts yesterday morning over an allegation that he had accepted a gratification from an accused in a pending case.


Water cut

The National Water Supply and Drainage Board announces that the water supply to following areas will be interrupted for 24 hours from 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 21 up to 9 a.m. on Sunday, November 22 to carry out essential maintenance work in transmission main at the fly-over construction site at Orugodawatta.

The affected areas are: Maligawatte area, Mahawatte area, Baseline Road, Grandpass area, Stace Road, Bloemendhal Road, Sangamitta Road, New Chetty Street, Maha Vidyalaya Mawatha, Central Road, Vivekananda Mawatha, Wolfendhal Mawatha and Ginthupitiya area and Wellampitiya, Sedawatte, Kotuwila in Kolonnawa area.


Get-together

An evening of reminiscences for the pre ‘70s Old Peterites and their families will be held at the Dutch Burgher Union (DBU) Hall on November 28 from 7.30 p.m. Tickets will be available upto November 24.


Surasa Gee Anandaya

A musical evening titled the Surasa Gee Anandaya has been organized by the Old Anandians’ Buddhist Association on November 27 at 6.30 p.m. at the Ananda College Kularatna Hall. It is held to commemorate the 21st Anniversary of the Old Anandians’ Buddhist Association.

The inaugural session of the sixth council of the Southern Provincial Council will be ceremonially opened today at 10.00 a.m. by Southern Province Governor Kumari Balasooriya.

Professor Raja de Alwis will deliver a public Buddhist talk in English on “Stress Management in Daily Life” at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society on Saturday, November 21 at 4.30 p.m. at the Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya.


Massive fraud bared

An alleged fraud involving Rs 16 million has been uncovered by the Auditor General Department’s Kandy branch at the Kandy General Hospital.

Investigations have revealed that cheques to the value of Rs 16 million had been issued to suppliers while only Rs 10,77,154.00 had remained in the cash book. Audit has also found irregularities in the use of cheque books.


Soldier found hanging in jungle

A herdsman found the body of a soldier hanging in a jungle patch in Palugaswewa, Kahatagasdigiliya on Tuesday noon.

Police spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratna said a herdsman who was tending some cows in a jungle near the Palugaswewa cemetery found a man hanging on a tree. The deceased was identified as T. Rukmal Pradeep Kumara (28), a resident of Palukotuwewa, Kahatagasdigiliya. Pradeep Kumara was a soldier who was on holiday.

“The soldier was serving in the Mankulam camp and he was on holiday”, he added.

Doctors have determined that M. Kumaratunga Pieris of No. 10A 1/1, Pepiliyana Road, Nedimala, Dehiwala needs an immediate transplant of an O-Positive type kidney.
