IT for Dhamma teachers

The Education Ministry has decided to grant Information Technology education to all Dhamma School teachers in the island.

According to a report issued by the Department of Buddhist Affairs, 114,308 teachers are serving in 9,211 Dhamma Schools throughout the island.


Schoolgirl sets herself on fire

A schoolgirl committed suicide after setting herself on fire following revelation of a love affair.

The victim was a Grade 10 student of a leading school in Matale. She died at the Matale Hospital on Wednesday while being treated for burn injuries.

According to Police investigations, the girl had reportedly been upset after her love affair with a youth became public at her school.


Travel warning relaxed

The Japanese government has relaxed the travel Advisory issued to Japanese nationals with regard to visits to the North and East of Sri Lanka.


Students rescued

Seven students of Katubedda University, who went on a boat ride in Bolgoda Lake were rescued by two policemen while the boat got stuck in mud following a mishap yesterday. Sources said that the condition of the victims was not serious.

The rescue mission was carried out by two police officers attached to the Moratumulla police division, under the direction of SSP Hemantha Adikari of Mount Lavinia police.


Ehelepola Walawwa to be conserved

Sabaragamuwa Governor, Janaka Priyantha Bandara has taken action to conserve Ratnapura “Ehelepola Walawwa” as a place of archaeological value.

This walawwa is more than 200 years old. It was used by Ehelepola ‘Adhikaram as his official residence when he administered Ratnapura area.

Two large mansions can be seen even today in Ratnapura town used by ‘Ehelepola Maha Adhikarama’ during his reign in Sabaragamuwa who ruled up country in the year 1811.


Applications called for journalism course

The Sri Lanka College of Journalism is accepting applications for the Diploma in Journalism Course for 2010.

Selected applicants will be assigned to the class of their choice to follow the Diploma Course in print, radio and television streams in all three languages.

Deadline for the applications for 2010 batch is November 30. Applicants must be within the age group of 18 to 25 and must have at least three passes at the Advanced level examination.

DPF members join CWC

Members of the Bogawantalawa Democratic People’s Front (DPF) including Bogawantalawa organizer Vincent Perera, town organizer, estate committee leader, union representatives and other local leaders joined the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) recently. Youth Empowerment and Socio Economic Development Minister and CWC General Secretary Arumugan Thondaman welcomed the new members along with Central Provincial Council members S. Ram and S. Ramesh.


Sai Baba birthday celebrations

The Sai Nilayam at No. 113, New Chetty Street, Colombo 13 will celebrate the 84th birthday of Sri Sathya Sai Baba on November 23. The program will commence at 5 a.m. The inter-religious flag hoisting ceremony will commence at 9 a.m. and special poojas and bajan will be held the full day. A Sai Chariot Procession will be held on the November 22 at 6 p.m.


Get-together

The annual get-together of the old Anandians 93 Group will be held on November 28 at the Ambalama Holiday Resort Hanwella.


Fund raiser

The Business and Professional Women Sri Lanka (BPW-SL) will hold their annual fund raiser in the form of a grand sale on Friday, November 27 at the Public Library Auditorium, Green Path, Colombo from 9.30 a.m. to 6 p.m.


Concert, awards ceremony

Finals of the Mohan Lal Grero Foundation Concert and Awards Ceremony will be held at Lyceum International School, Nugegoda on November 22 at 2.00 p.m.

About 30,000 students from 72 English language training centers, about 412 were selected for the MLGF concert and final competition.
