Woman, five others arrested

A young unmarried mother and five others including her lover were arrested on Thursday for selling her child.

The woman's father had lodged a complaint with Bakamuna Police after his daughter returned home without the newborn baby.

"The unmarried woman aged 17 had given birth on October 30.

The family members were aware that she was expecting a child even though she was not married. When she returned home without the baby, the woman's father lodged a complaint," Police Spokesman SSP I.M. Karunaratne said.

The woman and five others including her lover and a hospital attendant were arrested by Bakamuna Police.

"During interrogation, the suspect had confessed to selling the newborn child," Police said.

However, the baby has still not been traced.

The suspects produced before the Polonnaruwa Magistrate were remanded until November 27.
