CJ at relaunch of Justice magazine:

Transparency and accountability vital

It is pertinent to note that the public has to have information with regard to decisions, actions and policy of public authorities. This is vital to ensure the transparency and accountability of all authorities. said Chief Justice Asoka de Silva at the re-launching of the "JUSTICE" Magazine at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court Complex recently.

Speaker W.J.M. Lokubandara and Justice and Law Reforms Minister Milinda Moragoda were the guests of honour.

The Chief Justice said transparency and openness in public decision making will minimize the opportunity for other allegations such as bribery and corruption. The Chief Justice emphasised that the magazine "Justice" was first published by Dr.A.R.B. Amarasinghe in 1983. This magazine was published till the elevation of Dr. Amarasinghe to the Supreme Court. After that too I think the Secretary who took over Mrs. Wijayatilake and P.B. Herath continued the good work but due to pressure of other work the publication ceased. Now after several years the present Minister having realized the value and the importance of the publication invited the present Editorial Board to do justice to the 'Justice' Magazine.

"In the past the magazine carried very informative articles such as laws delays, Judicial Ethics, Supreme Court Rules, historical development of the laws etc., "I enjoyed the space reserved for humour. I hope the current editors would preserve this feature in the future editions, the Chief Justices aid.

"Additionally, the public should be informed about any new projects that are to be undertaken by the Ministry. These provisions are really an attempt to give official information to the public, the Chief Justice said.

The Welcome address was delivered by Randima Attygale, Justice and Law Reforms Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath delivered the vote of thanks.
