Sri Jayawardhanapura reopens

Lectures for the first and third year students of the Management and Commerce Faculty and Arts Faculty of the University of Sri Jayawardhanapura will commence as usual from today. The date of recommencement for second year students of the two faculties will be notified within the next week.

The two faculties were closed on November 11.


Jungle abattoir raided

Five suspects were arrested along with 3,600 kgs of beef from illegal slaughter in jungles of Lunugamvehera yesterday morning.

The beef together with the heads of nine cattle were seized by Police.


Pastor killed in road mishap

A Christian pastor was killed in an accident at Rai junction, Balangoda. The pastor was riding on the pillion of a motorbicycle which collided with a SLTB bus on Thursday. The deceased is identified as T.J. Prakash, 32.

Meanwhile, in another accident in Ratnapura town on the same day, a 67-year old rider of a motorcycle was killed on the spot when the motorbicycle crashed against a lorry, Ratnapura police said.

The victim is identified as S.A. Piyasena. The lorry driver was taken into custody.


IDP food stocks pilfered

Saliyawewa Police yesterday took into custody 14,600 kgs of dhal contained in 192 sacks while being transported on the Anuradhapura-Puttalam Road suspected to be a consignment removed from food stocks destined for IDPs in Vavuniya.

The driver of the lorry who was taken into custody, told Police that he had been instructed to take the consignment to a trader in the Pettah Manning Market. He and another person arrested have been taken to Vavuniya for further investigation.


Azeez memorial oration

The Dr. A.M.A. Azeez memorial oration will be held on Tuesday, November 24 at 5 p.m. at the Dr. A.M.A. Azeez Auditorium of All Ceylon YMMA, 63, Sri Vajiragnana Mawatha (Dematagoda) Road, Maradana, Colombo 10. Dr. A.M.A. Azeez was the first Muslim Civil Servant; one time Principal of Zahira College, Colombo, Senator, Founder of the YMMA and the Ceylon Muslim Scholarship Fund. A book titled ‘Muslim Education in Sri Lanka’ and a book in Tamil A.M.A. Azeez - a profile will be released on this occasion. This is a public lecture and open to all.
