Jaffna IDPs home bound today

The resettlement of internally displaced persons is being expedited. All the Jaffna district IDPs will go to their original places of residence today. The number of IDPs at Menik Farm welfare centre had come down to 121,849 by yesterday, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Ministry Secretary U.L.M. Haldeen told the Daily News.

Govt to sign agreements with Indian, Chinese companies:

Northern railway line reconstruction expedited

The Government will sign agreements with an Indian and a Chinese company to reconstruct the Northern railway line from Omanthai to Kankesanthurai next week. The Indian company IRCON will construct the railway line from Omanthai to Pallai while China Railway Number Five Group will undertake the construction of the railway line from Pallai Kankensanthurai, Sri Lanka Railway’s General Manager P.P. Wijesekara told the Daily News.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday emphasised the need for people of all communities and religions to live under a single banner in a spirit of understanding and co-existence. At a time when we are marching towards accelerated development goals after overcoming many challenges on our path the need to create a disciplined society which upholds mutual respect has arisen more than ever before, he said.

Workers’ remittances up 10.3 percent to $2,481 million:

Trade deficit contracts for ninth month

The trade deficit contracted for the ninth consecutive month in September 2009 by 62.2 percent to US dollars 220 million. The cumulative trade deficit decreased by 60.0 percent to US dollars 1,848 million during the first eight months of 2009 from US dollars 4,615 million in the corresponding period of 2008.
