Independence Square Development Project:

First, second stages complete

The first and second stages of the Independence Square Development Project which has been implemented by the Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Ministry have already been completed, a UDA official said.


Urban Development and Sacred Area Development Minister Dinesh Gunawardena and Ministry officials on an inspection tour of the Independence Square Development Project.

"The estimated cost of the project is Rs 350 million and it is planned to be carried out in 12 stages," the official said.

"Rs 90 million has been spent so far which has resulted in the construction of a new pedestrian foot path between the Independence Square building and the planetarium and the reconstruction and development of the surrounding area," he said.

"Consequently work has been accelerated on the third and fourth stages of this project, which is a proposed Cultural Avenue from Baudhaloka Mawatha to the Independence Square Development area and work in connection with the Ceremonial Entrance to the Independence Square," he said.

The Independence Square Development Project, the area of which is bounded by Gregory's Road, Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Maitland Crescent, Wijerama Mawatha and Prof Stanley Wijesundara Mawatha has been identified as an accelerated development area.

"This project is being carried out by the UDA to enhance the stature and protect the nobility of Independence Square building and establish a green zone comprised trees and foliage surrounding it," he said.
