More IDPs to be resettled in Mullaitivu, Vavuniya districts

More than 10,000 IDPs would be resettled in Thunukkai, Poonagari and Mallavi areas while another 18,000 IDPs would be resettled in Vavuniya North within the next few days, Northern Province Governor G.A. Chandrasiri said yesterday.

Each resettled family is given 12 to 18 roofing sheets, 10 bags of cement, material to build fences around their houses, squatting pans for latrines, kitchen utensils, dry rations for six months and a financial assistance of Rs. 50,000 to build partly damaged houses and a sum of Rs. 350,000 to rebuild a fully damaged house he said.

Each resettled villager will get three three-wheelers worth one million rupees, so that they could use them in an emergency like going to hospital during an emergency illness, he further said.

The officers of the Northern Provincial Council numbering 146 were provided with bicycles yesterday to visit the villages and work among the IDPs to sort out any problems. He had written to the Defence Ministry to allow the Government vehicles to ply on the A9 road as he said only public transport and lorries were allowed to run on A9 road, he noted.
