Rs 114 m allocated to protect Marawila coast from erosion

The Government has allocated Rs. 114 million to protect the coastal belt of two kilometres from Mudukatuwa St. Peter’s Church to Marawila Holy Cross Church.

Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Minister Felix Perera told the Daily News that he was awaiting Cabinet approval for a paper submitted by him and once received construction of the defensive sea barrier along the related sea belt will commence.

He added that the Treasury has decided to release the initial cost of the project, Rs.25 million soon and directed to cover the balance through the allocation made to the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Ministry and the Coast Conservation Department by the Vote on Account 2010.

Over fisher 2,000 families living along the sea belt faced severe hardships due to the rough sea season.

They had been looking for temporary shelter to avoid the damage caused to their lives and houses.
