Fuel adjustment charges
Further relief to industrialists, hoteliers
The Government has decided to extend the concession of not levying
the 30 percent fuel adjustment charge from industrialists and hoteliers.
This decision was conveyed to the Ceylon Electricity Board and the
Sri Lanka Public Utilities Commission. Steps have been taken by the
Commission to publish the Gazette notification in respect of this
decision, said a press release issued by the Government Information
Department.
Power and Energy Ministry Secretary M. M. C. Fernando told the Daily
News that industrialists and hoteliers need not pay the fuel adjustment
charge even after November 11, 2009.
Police recover arms, explosives
Bandara Vipulasena Vavuniya Central
Vavuniya police recovered a huge stock of arms and explosives from a
raid conducted in Wellamullivaikkal area in Mullaitivu recently.
These items included 20 kg high explosives, 69 anti-personnel mines,
13 claymore mines, 20 kg of C4 type explosives, 175 detonators, 40 fuse
wires, 1236 ammunitions of 16 mm and 18 cans of 50 lt chemical barrels
hidden underground nearly an year ago.
Four robbers in police net

The Matale Police Crime Investigation Unit arrested four persons of
an organised gang of robbers who were allegedly involved in a spate of
house breaking and burglaries in the country. Police said the four were
hardcore criminals from Kandy, Gampola and Thalathuoya.
Threatening UC Chairman: Suspect arrested

Chilaw Police arrested a suspect who has allegedly threatened Chilaw
Urban Council Chairman Hillary Fernando on November 29.
According to a complaint made to Police by the Mayor, the suspect is
alleged to have drawn a pistol and threatened him when he visited Chilaw
town with his wife and children in his vehicle.
The suspect had thereafter left the scene after allegedly kicking the
Mayor's vehicle.
The suspect was due to be produced in Court yesterday.
Costly haul by snatch thieves

Two men on a motorcycle had snatched a gold necklace valued at Rs
40,000 from a pedestrian near the Wennappuwa bus stand and sped away
recently.
Wennappuwa Police are investigating.
Rajan Cadets to tour North
The Dharmaraja Cadet Platoon - 2009 will take part in a guided tour
of the North from December 01 to 04.
This event is organized by the Old Rajans of Sri Lanka Army as a
tribute to Rajans Cadet Platoon for having won Herman Louise Shield for
the fifth time in Sri Lanka’s cadetting history, which is an outstanding
performance. Commencing from the School, cadets along with the Principal
- Dharmaraja College, Kandy, Master in Charge, Prefect of Games and the
Coach will be accompanied to areas of Kalmadu (61 Divisional
Headquarters under Commander, Brigadier Nissanka Ranawana RWP RSP psc),
Mannar, Jaffna and Nagadeepa by the army officers of various capacities.
Moreover, a naval boat ride is included in the itinerary during their
stay at Mannar which is organised by Commodore Dassanayaka of Sri Lanka
Navy.
A dinner will be hosted at Officers’ Mess- Gajaba Regimental Centre,
Saliyapura, Anuradhapura and is expected to present each individual of
the team with mementos, as a token of appreciation of the remarkable
achievement.
Bodhi pooja
The JICA Alumni Association of Sri Lanka will conduct a Bodhi Pooja
and Pirith Chanting at the Gangaramaya, Hunupitiya, Colombo 2 on
Saturday, December 12, commencing 5.30 pm to invoke blessings on Emperor
Akihito of Japan in connection with his 76th Birthday.
Photographic exhibition
The 54th annual exhibition of photography of the Photographic Society
of Sri Lanka will be opened on December 4 at 10 am at the Harold Pieris
Gallery, Lionel Wendt Art Centre, 18 Guildford Crescent, Colombo 07.
OBA get-together
A get-together for old boys organized by Asoka Vidyalaya Old Boys’
Association, Maradana, will be held on December 11 at 6.30 pm at the
Capital Mall Hall, Thalawathugoda.
ICES lecture
The International Centre for Ethnic Studies will hold a
lecture/discussion on Gendered Fictions: Media and the Making of the
Malaiyaha Identity by Sumathy Sivamohan of the Department of English,
University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka at 5.30 pm on Friday December 4 at
the ICES Colombo Auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 08.
Ekadipathi at the Wendt
Ekadipathi (the Dictator), one of the earlier productions of
Dharmasiri Bandaranayake will be staged as a celebration of his
33-year-career in the theatre, on December 3 and 4 at the Lionel Wendt.
The drama which was originally written and directed by Dharmasiri
took eight awards including the best original play of the year and the
best actor at the State Drama Festival in 1974.
