He was speaking at the brand launch of Sri Lankan Tuna at the
Cinnamon Lakeside recently. The Minister said that infusion of
technology is important for tapping the island's rich natural resources.
In this regard more sophisticated methods should be introduced and
people need to be trained in the use of modern equipment.
Sri Lanka has been acknowledged as one of the most important natural
resources hub in the world. The geographical location of the country,
together with its natural harbours and abundant marine life, makes Sri
Lanka an ideal platform for a natural resources based economy, he said.
The Minister said in the economic perspective the unification of the
country has a huge potential for growth and today's challenge is
economic development despite other rival forces.
The increase in the number of tourist arrivals from France by 50
percent shows that Sri Lanka is regaining its position.
Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Deputy Minister Neomal Perera said
that the brand of tuna heralds a era in the future of our fisheries
industry and it will bring greater recognition and generate revenue for
the nation's prosperity. There is a significant growth after 2000 in the
