UNP, LTTE suppressed intellectuals - President

The people will never forget the era when both the terrorists and the UNP suppressed intellectuals in this country, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa when he met a group of Vice-Chancellors and university lecturers at Temple Trees on Sunday afternoon.

More than 1,000 dons representing all universities attended the meeting. The President said the voice of intellectuals could not be muted or subdued by shackling them.

President Rajapaksa recalled that there was a time when cruel LTTE terrorists murdered Tamil intellectuals in cold blood. “Similarly the UNP too had a history of dislike towards intellectuals,” he said.

Therefore he would request all intellectuals to study the development program of the Government and render their support for it.
