Demonstrators arrested

Demonstrations and arrests continued on Sunday as the UN Climate
Summit in the Danish capital entered into its second week, while
Environment Ministers started arriving in the city.
Climate Action Justice Organization alleged that Danish Police had
arrested nearly 50 demonstrators near the harbour. The organization
added that they had been charged and arrested by Police without any
provocation. "Police charged violently at the crowd and began arrests,
forcing people to sit on the ground in two degree temperature while
cuffed. The scenes seem to be an exact repetition of the human rights
violations from yesterday," the group stated in a media release.
Five helicopters were seen hovering above the city's sky yesterday.
Media quoting Danish Police reported yesterday that almost all
detainees arrested during demonstrations Saturday had been released
except for a few. The organization on Saturday accused that Danish
police had arrested a large number of demonstrators in violation of
their rights including more than 100 of their activists at a mass
demonstration rally in the capital on Saturday.
The organization in a media release stated that nearly 100 activists
were handcuffed, seated on the road in extremely cold near zero
temperature.
Police stated that they were arrested as they wore masks which were
illegal at a demonstration in Denmark.
The demonstrations were organized to mark the Global Day of Climate
Action urging the world leaders to come to an agreement to tackle the
climate change, which fell on Saturday. |
