Great betrayal

The interview given by Sarath Fonseka to the Sunday Leader on December 13, 2009 wherein he alleges that three LTTE leaders who came to surrender with white flags during the final stages of the battle were shot dead by ground troops, has opened an UN probe into possible war crimes charges against the Heroic Forces.

Senior citizens get 20 percent

The Government has decided to pay a 20 percent bonus interest for the deposits of senior citizens on a request of senior citizens with effect from January 2010, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

Work begins on Northern irrigation projects

The Re-awakening Project launched under the Nation Building and Estate Infrastructure Development Ministry with World Bank financial assistance has taken the initiative to rehabilitate the main four irrigation schemes in the Northern Province at a cost of Rs 835 million, Project Director P.H. Sugathadasa said. The project has allocated Rs 385 million for Giants Tank in Mannar district and Rs 200 million for Iranamadu in the Kilinochchi district.
