Desire for peace, progress and democracy
It is with a sense of humility that I accept the
most prestigious award of the “Doctorate Honoris Causa” of the
Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia. I do so because the
accomplishments mentioned in the citation stem not from my
individual effort but from the efforts of the people of Sri Lanka.

The Dasa Raja Dharma: Handbook, insurance policy and litmus test
Elections are about claims and counter-claims.
They are about posturing and ridiculing of posture. Some of it was
so crude that they failed as communication devices; they did not win
any votes and may have even turned off a few loyalists. Some of it
was classy and even if they didn’t engineer defection nevertheless
generated some laughs. I am thinking of the cartooned spoof of
Saheli Gamage’s song ‘Maharajaneni’, praising President Mahinda
Rajapaksa for comprehensively eliminating the terrorist threat posed
by Prabhakaran and the LTTE.

Presidential Poll result an SLFP victory
The coalition of parties, a motley group of
political parties with divergent views, for which General Sarath
Fonseka gave leadership, has been defeated at the Presidential poll
which gave special recognition to some of the fundamental realities
of the Sri Lankan polity. As Aristotle once said, the study of
politics signifies a method or a form of enquiry, concerned with the
human behaviour in political societies. Ernest Barker, a British
political scientist too saw this fundamental difficulty in the study
of highly volatile political societies.
