Celebration on the occasion of 62nd National Day of Sri Lanka was
held on February 4, with the participation of Sri Lankan Nationals,
well-wishers and Hony.
Consuls for Sri Lanka in Jerusalem and Haifa and North of the State
of Israel at the Embassy premises, Tel Aviv.
The celebration commenced with the hoisting of the National Flag by
Air Chief Marshal (Retd.) H. E. Donald Perera and the singing of the
National Anthem by all Sri Lankans. The National day messages of the
President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake and
Foreign Affairs Minister Rohitha Bogollagama of Sri Lanka was read by
the Head of Mission.
Addressing the gathering the Head of Mission indicated the
significance of the 62nd Anniversary of Sri Lanka’s Independence after
completely defeating the separatist terrorist movement in Sri Lanka.

Eighteen years of service in the Kingdom bears testimony to the
services rendered by the Sri Lankan Expatriates Society in the capital,
observed the newly elected President Andrew Sinnen told his countrymen
at the 18th Annual General Meeting of the society, held at the Sri Lanka
Embassy premises, Friday.
A new office-bearers were elected for the current year at the meeting
held under the supervision of the Sri Lankan Embassy Commercial
Secretary Yasantha De Silva.
He solicited the cooperation of all present members to chalk out a
new plan for 2010 which would be implemented for the greater good of the
community.
Sri Lankan Ambassador Ahmed Aflel Jawad, distributed certificates of
recognition to the members of the outgoing committee in appreciation of
their services.
Janasetha Peramuna hands over nominations for Galle

The Janasetha Peramuna yesterday evening handed over their
nominations in respect of the General Election for the Galle district to
Galle district returning officer Asoka Jayasekara. This was the first
nominations received for the Galle district.
The nominations were handed over by the Party’s district leader
Sameera Krishantha. The other candidates are as follows: 2. Kumara
Wickramasinghe, 3. Supun Chanddika Wickramasinghe, 4. Ashoka Deneththi,
5. Chamara Sandakelum, 6. Upul Krishantha, 7. Kumuddini Mudannayaka, 8.

Car goes down precipice

Three inmates including a child of a car were injured when the
vehicle parked at Pothgul Viharaya, Kandy fell down an incline of nearly
50 feet at the official residence of Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada
Maligawa, Kandy Sunday.
The injured had come for an almsgiving at Pothgul Viharaya on Sunday
when the incident occurred.

A Public Lecture on ‘State of the Economy’ organized by the
Organisation of Professional Associations at 275/75, Prof. Stanley

Buddhist talk
Anil Goonewardene will deliver a Buddhist talk in English on
“Selflessness and Emptiness”, at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha

The British High Commission will launch an English Language Teacher
Training course in Jaffna at Hindu College, Jaffna Main Hall on February
