Visiting world renowned Indian musician Ravi Shankar Sharma called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa at Temple Trees on Thursday. Ravi Shankar Sharma who was born in India is a great musician who has won the hearts of music fans world over including those in the West and Asia. He has created melodies for more than 200 films in many Indian languages. His musical career spans a period between 1930 and 1975. He started his career as an assistant music director in films and blossomed to be a lovable composer of superior melodies that still linger. President Mahinda Rajapaksa welcoming Ravi Shankar Sharma said he was glad to see him in Sri Lanka and wished him well in his future musical life. The President also presented a memento to Ravi Shankar Sharma in appreciation of his visit. Minister Mahinda Yapa Abeywardene and Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga were also present.

For year 2009:

Expats remit over Rs 350 b

Fourteen percent increase over 2008:

The remittances of expatriate Sri Lankans has recorded an unprecedented increase to 3.3 billion dollars (Over Rs 350 billion) last year. It was a 14 percent increase over the remittances during the previous year, 2008, Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said yesterday.

No setback in tea exports

There is no set back in tea production or tea exports, Sri Lanka Tea Board Chairman Lalith Hettiarachchi said. Sri Lanka is the largest exporter of pre-packed tea under brand name among tea producing countries. Sri Lanka earns more revenue from tea exports than other countries, he told the Daily News yesterday.

False allegations to bring disrepute to Army

A post-mortem report on the corpse of a man found floating in the Mailavattuvan river and report of a medical examination on a girl allegedly sexually abused by soldiers had proved that both these allegations were false and were meant to bring disrepute to the army, senior army official sources said.
