Archaeology training program

An archaeological excavation program has been carried out at the
ancient inner city of Anuradhapura under the supervision of Prof Corl
Mear, University of Berlin Germany said Deputy Director General of
Archaeology Dr. Nimal Perera to the Daily News yesterday.
This program is a training program for university lecturers and field
officers are also trained under this program.
According to the excavations they have gathered more information on
the previous civilizations of Sri Lanka. From the beginning of the stone
age, all periods are examined by archaeologists he added.
Community hall for fishermen

The Fisheries Co-operative Society of Ampe Kadiragonna in Balapitiya
will construct a community hall for the fishermen engaged in fishing
industry around Madu Ganga in Balapitiya.
The building to be constructed will include an auditorium and a
fisheries bank. The building will be constructed close to the Ampe
fishery ferry.
Mini Infotel in Jaffna:
IT to the village
The Federation of Information Technology and Industrialists Society (FITIS)
held a Mini Infotel exhibition at Wembadi Girls College, Jaffna
recently.
This exhibition aimed at taking new technology to the village will
bring about a new economic resurgence in Jaffna, FITIS Chief Executive
Officer Damith Hettihewa said.
Parallel to this exhibition, four IT courses were also inaugurated
for the benefit of youth now being rehabilitated at four Rehabilitation
Centres at Thellipalai, Kaithadi and Settikulam.
Meanwhile, the Institute of Communication Information Technology (ICT)
and the Education Department had also organised a workshop covering
nearly 5,000 school children during this period, CEO Hettihewa said.
Certificate awarding ceremony
The Diploma and NVQ certificates Awarding Ceremony of Agio Sirilak
Sahana Sewa Vocational Training Centre, Pothuwila, Payagala will be held
on March 16 at the training centre.
Chairman of Royal Netherlands Agio Sika Company Addy Wintermans and
the Director General of Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission Dr.
T.A. Piyasiri will be present.
Correction & Clarification
Tank project targets 6,000 farmers
With reference to the above news item which appeared on Page 3 of our
issue of March 6 we are inadvertently stated that the Iranamadu Tank was
originally built by the Dutch.
Project Director, PEACE Project, V. Regunathan says, according to the
Irrigation Department records this tank was built in the last century,
around 1905 by the British. The then Engineer In Charge of the
Irrigation Department was Henry Ward who later became the Director
Irrigation. According to historical records the Dutch had not built any
major tanks during their period. Dr. R.L. Brohier (who is of Dutch
descent) retired Surveyor General who wrote the book “Ancient Irrigation
Works” had not mentioned about Dutch contributions for this scheme.

IPSL Guest Lecture on “The Search for Extraterrestrial Life” by
Astronomer Royal Professor Sir Arnold Wolfendale on March 16 at
4.00-5.00 p.m. at Physics Conference Room, Department of Physics,
University of Colombo, Colombo 03.
Panel Discussion
The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) in
association with the Sri Lanka, Australia, New Zealand Association (SLANZA)
have organized a Panel Discussion on ‘Sri Lankan Migration Trends and
Challenges’ on March 17 from 05.30 p.m. to 07.30 p.m. at the BCIS
Auditorium. This Panel Discussion aims to create awareness among the
Enforcement Officers, Government officials and other Stakeholders
interested in issues and challenges pertaining to Migration.
The Participation to this Panel Discussion will be on invitation.
