Eye surgery that was never needed

Kandy police arrested a con man who begged money from passengers in long distance buses saying he needed to undergo an eye surgery. Police said the suspect had produced a fake medical certificate that his eyes needed surgery. The suspect was remanded till March 23.

Kopay Teachers Training College lecturers protest

Kopay Teachers’ Training College lecturers and teacher trainees have stopped attending lecturers for the last five days. They have padlocked the principal’s office and prevented her from entering the office. They also locked exit doors to prevent the principal from getting out of the campus.

The lecturers and the teacher trainees shouted slogans against the administration and displayed placards against the principal at the college main entrance.


Sports equipment for clubs

The National Youth Services Council will provide 700 youth clubs in Gampaha district with cricket equipment on March 23 at 11 a.m. at Naiwala Sanasa Hall, Minuwangoda.

In addition to that the Council will provide 13 youth clubs federations with Rs. 10,000 each to start a library.

The chief guest at the ceremony will be the Chief Minister of the Western Province Prasanna Ranathunga and Pushpa Rajapaksa, Ministers of the district, six parliamentary members and Provincial Councillors also will grace the occasion.


AGM

The annual general meeting of the Old Boys’ Association of Dharmaraja College, Kandy will be held on March 28 at the college auditorium at 10.00 a.m.

The Dharmaraja College principal S.M. Keerthiratne will be presint at the meeting.


Edexcel accredited teacher training diplomas

The Academy of Professional Studies, affiliated to Sujatha Vidyalaya Nugegoda will conduct the Launching Ceremony of The Edexcel Accredited Teacher Training Diplomas’ together with Edexcel Internatonal United Kigdom (U.K.) at Hotel Galadari Anthurium Hall today at 5.00 p.m.


Maha Kumbabishegam

Maha Kumbabishegam for Sri Muthu Mariamman Temple, Bloomfield Division, Brunsick Estate, Maskeliya will be held on March 28 from 9.14 a.m. to 11.05 a.m.

The daily poojas will be held from March 26, 27 and 28 at the temple prior to Maha Kumbabishegam.

All poojas and prayers will be conducted by Srimani S. Selvaraj Kurukkal Chief Incumbent of Sri Muthu Mariamman Kovil, Bloomfield Estate. Maskeliya.


World Water Day celebrations

A ceremony to mark World Water Day 2010 organised by the NWSDB will be held at the BMICH Colombo today at 9 a.m. on the theme “safe drinking water for a healthy world”.

Water Supply and Drainage Minister A.L.M. Athaulla and Water Supply Minister Mahinda Amaraweera will be the chief guests.

Senior lecturer, Colombo University Dhamma Dissanayake will deliver the guest lecture. Prizes and awards will also be presented to the winners of an inter-school essay and poster competition and a contest among community organizations held in this connection.

This will be followed by a service award ceremony for employees who have completed 25 years service in the NWSDB and the launching of the Jalaya magazine.


Two meetings at Pelmadulla and Eheliyagoda

Youth Affairs Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi has stated that arrangements have been made to hold two meetings in order to consolidate the success of the United People’s Freedom Alliance. These two meetings will be held on March 23, one at 10.00 a.m. at Rilhena, Pelmadulla and the other at 2.00 p.m. at Eheliyagoda Cooperative Conference hall and these two meetings will be presided over by Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

There will be two special addresses by Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka thera and renowned actor Jackson Anthony.

The website of Minister Wanniarachchi www.pavithrawanniarachchi.com will also be launched by the Defence Secretary at the residence of the Minister at Rilhena.


Wildfire destroys cultivations

A wildfire erupted in Puhulwella, Kirinda has destroyed nearly 12 acres of land in the area.

The neighbours in the area had doused the fire which damaged cinnamon and rubber cultivations. Thihagoda police is conducting further investigation into the incident.


Woman dies in accident

An accident involving three vehicles in Marawila town along Chilaw- Colombo road had lost the life of a 24-year woman early morning yesterday.

The victim is identified as H. Chathurika Peiris of Lansigama, Marawila.

The seriously injured husband of the deceased Dimuthu Sudarshana (24) was admitted to hospital.

Marawila police is conducting investigation.


Rival supporters clash, three injured

Three persons including two STF police constables were injured and admitted to Puttalam hospital when a clash erupted between the supporters of UPFA and UNP at Alankuda Refugee Camp, Puttalam on Friday.

The incident had taken place following an argument between the supporters of two Vanni district candidates who came for canvassing at this refugee camp. Kalpitiya police is conducting investigations.


Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services Minister Maithripala Sirisena welcomes a group of over 200 UNP and JVP activists in Tamankaduwa who crossed over to the SLFP and obtained party membership at a ceremony in Polonnaruwa recently.
