Kavisha Madumali, a 16 year old girl of Kapugama, Devinuwara is
permanently disabled and receiving treatment at the Karapitiya hospital
orthopaedic clinic following a road accident she suffered while crossing
the road along the pedestrian crossing on her way to school sometime
ago.
This is the second tragedy that had struck her family within a span
of 16 years. Her father who was a casual labourer had died 16 years ago
after falling from a coconut tree.
Kavisha's mother W.R. Dayawathie Rajapaksa says she is unable to
cater to her daughter's medical needs due to her family's financial
plight. Kavisha who received four months indoor treatment at the
Karapitiya hospital had to still attend the hospital's orthopaedic
clinic every fortnight.
Medicines and other accessories prescribed by the clinic had to be
bought from private pharmacies and this involved a large sum of money
her family could not support.
Her family was undergoing untold suffering owing to the daughter's
plight. She said she would welcome any financial support from kind
donors and well-wishers' help her daughter out of her predicament.

Hotel school to boost tourism industry
Ariyapala WANSATHILAKE - Kurunegala Central Special
Building a hotel school will be a premier event of the Kurunegala
District to expand the tourism industry in the Sath Korale, said Wayamba
Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe at a media conference held at the Chief
Minister's office yesterday.
The Provincial Council and the Tourism Ministry will build two
storeyed hotel school at the Kurunegala Heraliyawa industrial park at a
cost of Rs. 100 million.
The Tourism Ministry will provide all infrastructure facilities to
this school. About 900 pupils will be enrolled for a six month course
annually. Those who passed the G.C.E. O/L examination can apply for the
course, the Chief Minister said.
Errant drivers arrested

The Kurunegala Police Traffic Division arrested 30 persons who drove
vehicles under influence of liquor during the New Year festive season.
Kurunegala Police Traffic Division OIC, SI Jayasekara said, regular
check-ups would continue further to apprehend drunken drivers as they
are responsible for the high rate of road accidents in the police area.
SLSM deputy Lekakhadhikari
Subodharama Maha Viharaya and Abhinavaramaya, Raddoluwa
Viharadhipathi Ven. Panditha Seeduwe Sumanawansa Thera was re-elected
Deputy Lekakhadhikari of the Samastha Lanka Shasanarakshake Mandalaya (SLSM)
at the Mandalaya’s AGM and election of office bearers held at the Public
Trustees Department recently. Buddhist Affairs Commissioner General
Chandraprema Gamage presided.
Infrastructure developed

The Mulatiyana Pradeshiya Sabha will develop infrastructure
facilities in the area.
The project includes the improvement of 68 rural roads, nine small
bridges, three side walls, two bathing spots, three community play
grounds and three community halls.
Govt employees must work for development

employees must get together to develop their respective areas and they
should deviate from confrontational policies to slove problems faced by
the people.

Stray dog menace on the increase

The menace of stray dogs in the Anuradhapura city and the suburb is
on the increase.
It has been estimated that nearly 5,000 stray dogs are roaming about
in the city posing a grave threat to motor traffic and pedestrians in
addition to creating a health hazard.
When inquired from Anuradhapura Mayor Dr. Kithsiri Lanka Caldera he
said, in terms of a Government circular there was no room for the
destruction of stray dogs except to control their breeding. As such the
Anuradhapura MC jointly with Government health authorities have embarked
on a sterilisation program for dogs in the city and the suburb.
Two killed in accidents

Two persons killed in two accidents occurred in the Wattala Police
area on Monday. A cyclist who was riding from Wattala towards Negombo
was knocked down by a container lorry and died on the spot at Averiwatta
junction, Wattala. He was identified as Selvanayagam Shantha Ramasamy
(17) of Maskeliya.
In another accident on the same day at the same place another person
who was knocked down by a three-wheeler died on admission to the Colombo
North General Hospital, Ragama. The body is lying at the Hospital
mortuary for identification.
Substandard seeds

Beetroot farmers of Polpitigama, Irudeniyawa and Pallekale in the
Yapahuwa electorate are facing difficulties due to substandard seeds
supplied to them by a private seed importer.
Every farmer spends about Rs. 150,000 to purchase seeds,
agro-chemicals, fertiliser and maintain the plant nurseries but could
not achieve satisfactory results.
Man dies falling from tree

A 48 years old father of two who climbed up a coconut tree to pluck
coconuts fell off from the tree and died.
The victim was D.M. Wickremasinghe of Ganewatta in the Wellawa Police
area.
At the inquest it was revealed that the deceased was a coconut
plucker and that when he was climbing a coconut tree at a coconut land
he slipped his feet and fell from the tree.

The Performance Awards Ceremony of the People’s Bank Western Zone II
will be held at the Jana Kala Centre, Battaramulla on April 25 at 4.00

A series of Bodhi Poojas will be held at 100 Buddhist temples in the
Kurunegala District to invoke blessings on newly elected
Parliamentarians of the District today.
Suspects fined

Fourteen suspects including two women were fined Rs. 132,000 by
Pugoda Additional Magistrate Aravinda Perera for possessing kasippu and
goda.
Kirindiwela police prosecuted.
Schools reopen today
Sinhala and Tamil medium schools will reopen today for the second
school term. The second term for Muslim schools began on Monday. All
schools closed for the first term vacation on April 5.
The first school vacation was shorter than previous years. All
scheduled academic activities have to be carried out from the beginning
of the second school term to get the benefit of the brief school
vacation, an Education Ministry spokesman said. (DA)

A muslim has been elected from the SLFP to represent the Kandy
district for the first time after a lapse of 50 years.
He is Faiszer Mustapha who came seventh in the UPFA list obtaining
44,678 preferential votes. Faiszer Mustapha who is the Akurana SLFP
organizer was Tourism Promotion Minister in the previous UPFA
Government.
