Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

[January 31 2012]

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

[January 25 2012]

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

The construction of the second ‘Abimansala’, the wellness resort for disabled War Heroes in the Southern Province will commence in Kamburupitiya, Matara tomorrow, under the patronage of Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

 

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

Boom in NE development activities:

Bank lendings see marked rise

There has been a marked rise in bank lendings with many economic activities starting in the Northern province and banks expanding their branch networks. Majority of the banks responded commendably in setting up branches in the Northern province, Central Bank’s Bank Supervision Director Y P Fernando said.

Urgent purchase of drugs:

Health experts in Mumbai

A Health Ministry team will arrive in India today to bring down 95 varieties of essential medicinal drugs, which are in short supply at public hospitals in the country. The team will meet representatives of pharmaceutical suppliers registered with the National Drugs Authority in Mumbai, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is in Iran to attend the G-15 Heads of States Summit had discussions with Iranian President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Teheran yesterday. President Mahinda Rajapaksa was warmly welcomed by Iranian President Dr. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad further strengthening the close ties between the two countries.

Three month deadline to renovate Wilpattu

Dilapidated infrastructure facilities at the Wilpattu National Park is set for speedy renovation on a directive by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa. The Minister who toured Wilpattu, during the weekend urged wildlife officials to renovate the road structure, camping sites, circuit bungalows within three months.
