Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

[January 31 2012]

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

 

Lotus Tower inauguration

Work on second Abimansala

The construction of the second ‘Abimansala’, the wellness resort for disabled War Heroes in the Southern Province will commence in Kamburupitiya, Matara tomorrow, under the patronage of Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

 

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

Simple tax scheme soon

The Government will soon formulate a simple tax procedure, which will address loopholes in the existing tax structure. Deputy Finance Minister and Senior Presidential Advisor Dr Sarath Amunugama will chair a committee which will look at all rules and regulations and formulate a simple tax procedure closing all loopholes in the existing system.

Rain, rain more rain

Over 267,505 persons belonging to 58,288 families were affected due to rains that continued lashing the Western, Sabaragamuwa and the Southern Provinces from last Friday. Colombo is the worst affected district with more than 119,736 affected persons belonging to 22,504 families.

Danuna Tilakaratne still at large

Five special CID teams deployed to arrest him:

Danuna Tilakaratne, son- in-law of General Sarath Fonseka is still at large absconding from the Courts and the police. A warrant has been issued for his arrest for defrauding a sum of US dollars 2,99,061.25 by forwarding forged documents to the Army. Although the CID has deployed five special teams to hunt him down he continues to elude the law to the surprise of many.
