Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

[January 25 2012]

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

 

Lotus Tower inauguration

Work on second Abimansala

The construction of the second ‘Abimansala’, the wellness resort for disabled War Heroes in the Southern Province will commence in Kamburupitiya, Matara tomorrow, under the patronage of Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

 

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

Create employment in North East -World Bank

Agriculture, tourism policies will materialize peace dividends:

Sri Lanka needs to understand the expectations of the people in the North and East and implement policies to create employment in those areas to enjoy peace dividends, a World Bank official said. World Bank Country Director for Sri Lanka and the Maldives Naoko Ishii launched the World Bank Regional Update in Colombo yesterday.

University admissions top 21,000

Intake would exceed 25,000 from next year:

A total of 21,111 students would be admitted to Universities for the next academic year. Among students who are selected around 15,000 are those following science courses while only 5,000 are following arts courses. The cut off marks for university admission based on the GCE (A/L) examination held in 2009 was released by Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake yesterday.

Trust me, and together we can find a solution to the problems faced by all our people, President Mahinda Rajapaksa told representatives of the Tamil political parties when they met him at his office in the Presidential Secretariat last evening (June 07). The President had meetings with members of the EPDP led by Minister Douglas Devananda and the TNA led by R. Sampanthan, MP.

Global warming, humans endanger marine sanctuaries

Hikkaduwa and Bar Reef Marine Sanctuaries are threatened mainly due to human activities and global warming, Sri Jayewardenepura University Zoology Department Senior Lecturer Kamal Ranatunga said. He was addressing a Mini Symposium on Biodiversity, organized by the Biology Institute and Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) at the SLAAS auditorium yesterday to mark the International Biodiversity Year.
