Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

[January 31 2012]

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

[January 25 2012]

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

 

Lotus Tower inauguration

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

IDB help to revive sick industries

The Industrial Development Board (IDB) has launched a rehabilitation project titled Punarjeewa to assist the SME sector industries in trouble islandwide. IDB Regional Development Director, U.Wimalasuriya told the Daily News Business that all SME sector industrialists who are running at a loss or with difficulties have been informed to report to their respective IDB district offices with the details and problems they are facing.

PA-UNP agree on Executive Premier

Stable Government a necessity:

The People’s Alliance (PA) and the United National Party (UNP) agreed to create a post of an Executive Premier who would be responsible to Parliament through a Constitutional amendment at a future date. This was a proposal submitted to the All Party Conference by the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). This decision was taken at a meeting of a PA delegation led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa and a UNP delegation led by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees yesterday.

Private Universities in Lanka by next year

Fee levying Universities in Sri Lanka is on the cards with a 20 percent share from the total intake being allocated as Scholarships for needy local students, Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake said. The Minister Sunday hinted that introduction of such a market-oriented mechanism to the existing University education system may come into effect by no later than next year.

Kandy air most polluted

Kandy district tops the list in air pollution in Sri Lanka. Its air is polluted three times more than the air in Colombo, Peradeniya University Chemistry Department Head Prof. O. A. Illeperuma said. Prof Illeperuma who has conducted research said people in the Kandy town continue to suffer as a result of polluted air within the city.
