Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

[January 25 2012]

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

 

 

President Mahinda Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa received the colourful Hindu Adi Vel 2010 procession when it reached Temple Trees along the Galle Road yesterday. This is the first time since 1994 that the 160-year-old Adi Vel Hindu religious procession travelled in front of Temple Trees on Galle Road. Operation Dengue-break : The Army has been deployed to assist the dengue prevention campaign. Here, students of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, Colombo assisted by Army personnel engaged in clearing mosquito breeding places in the school compound and the surrounding area under an operation to combat the dengue epidemic launched in Colombo yesterday. Death of Ruhunu University student:

Natural causes, says JMO

Special teams sent to university:

Ruhunu University student Rajapaksa Susantha Anura had died of natural causes, Inspector General of Police Mahinda Balasuriya citing the Badulla Judicial Medical Officer’s postmortem report on Bandara, said. Addressing the media last evening, IGP Balasuriya said according to Dr M N Rahul Haq’s postmortem report there was no evidence of violence while Bandara’s body had no injuries.
