Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

 

Lotus Tower inauguration

The construction of the second ‘Abimansala’, the wellness resort for disabled War Heroes in the Southern Province will commence in Kamburupitiya, Matara tomorrow, under the patronage of Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya.

 

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

John Keells Holdings PLC recorded a profit before tax (PBT) of Rs 1.53 billion for the first quarter ended June 30, 2010. This reflects an increase of 60 percent compared to the Rs 959 million in the corresponding period in the previous year.

Supply to reach 3,000 MW by 2012:

Norochcholai Phase I gives 300 MW:

The national power grid would be enriched by a further 300 MW (over 12 percent of the existing capacity) in November, courtesy the Norochcholai Coal Power plant, according to Mass Media and Communications Minister Keheliya Rambukwella.

Govt all out to control Dengue

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said the Government is ready to make any commitment for the eradication of dengue menace from the country. The President stressed that the Government is ready to bear any cost in importing drugs and medicine which would help control the deadly dengue menace and save lives of people who were diagnosed with the dengue virus.

Two Lankans among 73 illegal immigrants in Bulgaria

Two Sri Lankans were among the 73 illegal immigrants in Bulgaria who were heading to a European Union country. An External Affairs Ministry official said Bulgarian customs agents had discovered 73 illegal immigrants hidden in a refrigerator truck.
