OIC in hot water for jay walking

Kandy police arrested the Kalawanchcikudi police OIC for not crossing the road on the pedestrian crossing in Kandy yesterday.

The police officer in civvies crossed the road with his wife and child without listening to police officers’ instructions.

Central Province DIG Pujith Jayasundara has appointed ASP M. Mohottigedara to investigate into the incident.

Crossing roads in Kandy without using pedestrian crossings has been completely prohibited by Kandy police.

About 100 pedestrians crossing roads in isolated places have been produced before court and fined.


Student dashed on the ground

A trishaw driver who had allegedly assaulted and dashed a student on the ground was arrested by Chilaw Police. The suspect used to transport children to this well-known school in the Chilaw town where the victim attended. The accident took place on Wednesday. The victim Promuditha, a Year 10 student of the school was admitted to the Chilaw Hospital.


Royal College Class of ’72 breaks ground

Royal College Class of ‘72 has organized a series of mega events during 2009 and 2010.

“Bridging Sri Lanka” is one such project which will pave way to develop and link villages in the North, South, East and West and to uplift the living standards of the needy people, to bring peace and harmony and to have a better interaction between communities. On July 10, 2010, this mega community service project was launched by laying the foundation stone for a community centre in a small village named “KPMG Village” in Punithar Nagar in Nelliady, Point Pedro in the Jaffna peninsula.

A special delegation consisting of Class of ‘72 President Saman de Silva, Project Chairan Dr Hosney Cader and Azad Mansoor, Directors Karim Shums and Naomal Soysa represented Class of ‘72 at the inauguration of this project in Point Pedro, which was co-ordinated by Directors Rajendra Theagarajah and Shanker Somasunderam.

A colourful ceremony was organized by the Hatton National Bank’s Nelliady branch for this event.


OUSL to expand services

We want to expand our student population to 40,000 within next three years and improve the quality of the courses we offer, said Sri Lanka Open University Vice Chancellor Prof Upali Vidanapathirana addressing a media briefing to celebrate its 30th anniversary.

At the moment 27,500 students in the OUSL follow 64 academic courses including Post Graduates Degrees, Post Graduates Diplomas, Degrees, Diplomas and Certificate courses. There are four faculties of education, Engineering Technology, Humanities, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences. Fortunately 80 percent students are employed, he said.

“We are 30 yeas old and it is a long journey with lots of successes.

“We invite students to come and join us. Those unable to enter the Universities can pay a reasonable fee and enjoy theoretical and practical knowledge. At the moment OUSL has six regional centers and 24 teaching centers islandwide.

Robbed goods detected during special op

A car, truck and van that were robbed were found abandoned, near a garage in Galle during a special search operation conducted by the Southern Police Investigations Unit. The main suspect who had escaped from Police custody for a long time was taken into custody. The suspect was due to be produced before the Galle Magistrate.


Neluwa terror gang arrested

A gang, who had allegedly broken into over 20 houses in Neluwa and stolen goods and cash after threatening inmates with firearms were arrested yesterday.

Neluwa Police arrested the gang of five and seized some money and goods that they robbed and some weapons used by the suspects to commit the crime. Police seized three mobile phones, gold jewellery and Rs 60,000 out of the goods robbed.

Police also found two live hand grenades, two locally made guns and another gun made to use T56 bullets, eight T56 ammunition, a 12 bore shotgun and 12 of its cartridges allegedly used by the suspects.


Memorial Oration

The Board of Trustees and the Board of Management of the Nandadasa Kodagoda Memorial Trust will conduct the Deshamanya Nandadasa Kodagoda 13th memorial oration on "A post - war challenge for Sri Lanka. Dismantling the LTTE overseas and rebuilding a Sri Lankan identity" by Professor Rohan Gunaratna. The memorial oration will be held on Monday August 2 at 5.30 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute, Colombo 7. Sujatha Vidyalaya 45th anniversary

A Pirith chanting ceremony to mark the 45th anniversary of Sujatha Vidyalaya, Nugegoda will be held at the school premises today.

The ceremony will be held under the patronage of Gangaramaya Temple Chief Priest Ven Galaboda Gnanissara Thera.

The alms giving will be held tomorrow.


Adi Pooram festival

The annual Adi Pooram religious festival of the Mayurapathy Sri Bathrakali Amman Devasthanam temple will be conducted for the 23rd year in succession on August 12, 14, and 15.


Seminar

The Kelaniya University Accountancy Studies Department in collaboration with the Accountancy Student Union is conducting a seminar on Knowledge Management for Economic Revival on August 3 at the Hilton Hotel, Colombo at 5.00 p.m.

The chief guest on the occasion will be Vice Chancellor Prof Sarath Amunugama.


Environment friendly lubricants

The Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) has introduced environmental friendly lubricants and grease to the Sri Lankan market.

The Corporation earns a monthly income of Rs 100 million by selling lubricants, a Petroleum Industries Ministry spokesman said. ng

Senior Superintendent of Police Chula de Silva assumed duties as the Director City Traffic with immediate effect.


Blood donation

A blood donation campaign organised by the Sheela Bhavana Committee of the Nava Polonnaru Gal Viharaya, Dehiwala will be held at the Viharaya premises on August 1 from 8.30 a.m. to 3 p.m. said Viharadhipati Ven. Kanumuldeniye Sri Dharmasoka Thera.
