First Randoli Perahera tonight

The first Randoli Perahera of the Kandy Esala Pageant will parade the streets of Kandy tonight.

The Perahera will leave the Maligawa premises at 8 pm and pass through Dalada Veediya, D.S. Senanayake Veediya, Temple Road, Deva Veediya, Colombo Street, Kotugodella Veediya, Cross Street and D.S. Senanayake Veediya again and return to the Maligawa along Raja Veediya.

 

 

 

 


Drunk drivers fined

Pugoda Magistrate and Additional District Judge Aravinda Perera fined 11 motorcyclists and three-wheel drivers Rs 69,000 for driving under the influence of liquor.


Wattegama records 25 hepatitis cases

Twenty-five hepatitis patients have been identified from the Wattegama MOH Division and five are receiving treatment from the Kandy Hospital.

The balance are warded at the Wattegama Hospital.

Epidemiologist Dr Anoma de Silva said the disease had been caused due to consumption of unhygienic food and contaminated water.


Medical crossword No 42 draw

The Health watch Medical Crossword Draw No 42 will be held this Saturday (August 21) at the WISH (Wickremarachchi Institute of speech and hearing) at No 436, High Level Road, Delkanda, Nugegoda at 10.30 a.m. All prize winners of crossword No 41 have been invited for this draw to receive their prizes.


Bees honey pooja

The traditional 'Bees Honey pooja' offered to the Sacred tooth relic by the Adivasi Community of Dambana will be held at the Sri Dalada Maligawa Kandy this morning.


Twenty houses gutted

Twenty houses of the workers of Rockland Division, Delmar Estate, Pussellawa were gutted by a fire recently. The fire was caused by an electrical short circuit. Around 70 of the worker - victims are sheltered at the Sooriyakapatne school. Nuwara Eliya District Secretary D.P.G. Kumarasiri had visited the place and provided them with dry rations and other goods.


Conference, anniversary celebrations

The biennial conference of the Ceylon Estates Staffs Union and its 91st anniversary celebrations will take place at New Town Hall, Green Path, Colombo 7 on August 21.


Poetry, short story writing seminar

The English Writers’ Cooperative of Sri Lanka (EWC) invited participants to a one day seminar on poetry and short story writing at the Sri Lanka Federation of University Women auditorium 95/26, Kitulwatte Road, Colombo 8 on August 28.

The sessions will be conducted by University academics with lectures, discussions and participatory exercises. The seminar fee is Rs 1,000 per person.

Book launch

A book on rebuilding Sinhala-Tamil unity authored by Ven. Narampanawe Nandaratana Thera will be launched at a ceremony at the Sri Sambuddha Viharaya, Anuradhapura on August 26 at 2.30 p.m. NCP Governor Karunaratne Divulgane will be the Chief Guest. J R P Suriyapperuma MP will deliver a special lecture.


Musical show

Patum Didulana Rayak a musical show organized by the Police Seva Wanitha Unit to collect funds for the welfare of Police War Heroes’ families will be held at the Ananda College Kularatne Hall on August 20 from 7.00 p.m. to 11.00 p.m. under the patronage of First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa.

Lecture

Dr N.S. Cooray, Associate Professor International University of Japan and International Peace Studies Program Director (IUJ) will deliver a lecture on “Current Global Imbalances: Causes, Consequences and Solution” at the ICES Auditorium, 2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 on August 25 at 5.30 p.m. Dr. Cooray was a Research Associate and co-ordinated projects on Sustainable Development Framework for Indonesia and Eco-system Frameworks for Small Island States at the United Nations University/ Institute of Advanced Studies. Dr. Cooray’s publications include several referred articles, several book chapters and two edited volumes.

Cattle transporting racket nabbed

A lorry transporting 23 cattle illegally was seized and two suspects taken into custody by Alawwa police in the early hours of Monday.

Police said several pregnant cows were on the verge of death due to congestion at the time of the arrest and several others were lying with serious injuries.

Investigations revealed the suspects were transporting cattle from Habarana to Ja-ela and they had been carrying on the racket for the past twenty years.


Carbonic fertilizer bolsters paddy harvest

When using carbonic fertilizer, the total harvest from one acre of paddy is 203 bushels. It is only 133 bushels when artificial manure is used, Inter Provincial Agriculture Director Muthubanda said at a District Agricultural meeting held at the Kandy District Secretariat Auditorium. The Inter Provincial Director said the total acreage under the paddy cultivation in Minipe Stage I-II is about 9,805, and the harvest is 48,000 bushels of paddy.

The harvest is expected to be brought to 17 percent of the national requirement by harnessing modern technology by 2016.


Timber racket raided

Kananke police Tuesday seized a consignment of Allestonia timber prepared after felling in the Kethimitikanda reserved forest at Kananke with two suspects. At the time of seizure, arrangements have been made to transport the consignment, police said. Police are conducting investigations to arrest four of other suspects involved in this act.


Dengue eradication project

A pilot project to eradicate the dengue epidemic from the Pathadumbara area has been launched in the Madawala Bazzar, Napana - Abasingama 8th mile post and Pihilladeniya villages under a program jointly organized by the Pathadumbara Pradeshiya Sabha and Wattegama MOH office assisted by Samurdhi, Agriculture Offices, Temples and Voluntary organizations in the area.


Infant gets choked

A one and a half year old infant, Hirusha Hasanjaya of Diyalape, who had got choked while trying to consume a packet of jelly died on admission to the Matara hospital Wednesday.

Police said the child's mother had taken him to a near by temple to perform a bodhi pooja and while the mother was arranging the trays of flowers the child had tried to drink the jelly all by himself unknown to the mother. The body is lying at the hospital mortuary and the inquest was due to be held.
