Rehabilitees practise meditation

More than 100 rehabilitated girls undergoing vocational training at Link Apparel, Homagama participated in a meditation program at the Brahma Kumaris Raja Yoga Centre Saturday. The program was arranged by Rehabilitation Commissioner General Brigadier S Ranasinghe as a practical training in “Spiritual Upliftment”.

A presentation on “Love and Pure Feelings” was given by BK Sr Priyamavatha.

BK Srs Priyadarshini and Sri Priya conducted some physical exercises and a quiz contest.


Monthly lecture

The monthly lecture of the Royal Asiatic Society of Sri Lanka will be held August 30 at 5.00 p.m. at the Gamini Dissanayake Auditorium of the Mahaweli Centre, No. 96, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.

The title of the lecture is "The Ancient Irrigation Systems of Mesopotamia and Indus Valley Compared with the Reservoir Based Irrigation Systems of Sri Lanka and New Perspectives on the Anicut Systems (Amunas) of the former Kandyan Kingdom" presented by Dr C R Panabokke. The lecture is open to the public.


Mahanama AGM

The AGM of the Colombo Mahanama College Old Boys Association's '98 group will be held at the school hall on August 28 at 3.30 p.m. Contact 0713 823638.


Teacher training

The Gamini Dissanayake Foundation will hold a training program for pre-school teachers in Nuwara Eliya District on August 28 at 10 a.m. at the Town Hall, Nuwara Eliya. It will lead to a Diploma for pre-school teachers.

First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa will be the Chief Guest.


Awards ceremony

The award ceremony of the eighth Batch of students of the Gamini Dissanayake Institute of Technology and Vocational Studies, Nuwara Eliya will be held on September 2 at 3.00 p.m. at the Grand Hotel Nuwara Eliya.

Commercial Bank of Ceylon PLC Chairman Lion Mahendra Amarasuriya will be the chief guest.


Book launch

The first copy of the book A History of the Methodist Church, Sri Lanka will be presented to Prof G V P Somaratne on August 28 at 5.30 p.m. at the Methodist College Auditorium.

The Methodist Church, Sri Lanka, was established 196 years ago when the first five missionaries came to Ceylon on June 29, 1814. The compiling of this history was entrusted to Rev Nimal Mendis who has served the Methodist Church for nearly 40 years.


Induction ceremony

The Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka (IESL) will hold their annual induction and graduation ceremony - 2010 today at 5.00 p.m. at the Waters Edge, Capital City.

The induction of IESL's new Chartered Engineers, the awarding of certificates to candidates who have passed the IESL's Engineering Course in 2009 and 2010 and the awarding of scholarships to the 'Junior Inventor of the Year' (JIY) winners-2009 will take place.

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris will be the Chief Guest and Eng (Prof) Lakshman Jayathilleke the Guest of Honour.


Battle of Badr commemoration

The Moors Islamic Cultural Home under the auspices of the D'awa and Religious Committee will commemorate the 1429th Anniversary of the Day of the Battle of Badr today at 4.00 p.m. at Pasha Villa, 115, Dematagoda Road, Colombo 09.


Kamalasabayson Memorial Oration

The Kamalasabayson Foundation will hold the third annual K C Kamalasabayson memorial oration today at 5.00 p.m. at the Sri Lanka Law College Auditorium, Hulftsdorp, Colombo 12.

The oration will be delivered by Limited Nation International Commission Member and Foreign Ministry former Legal Advisor Dr Rohan Perera (President's Counsel). Chief Justice Asoka de Silva will be the Chief Guest while Attorney General Mohan Pieris will be the Guest of Honour.


Shramadana to fight dengue

A shramadana and awareness campaign organized by Nilwala National College of Education (NNCE) to curb the dengue epidemic will be held on August 31.

The campaign's theme is 'Curb the Dengue and Safeguard the country'. Over 600 participants including NNCE Dean, academic staff, non academic staff, trainee teachers, Akuressa and Athuruliya Divisional Secretary, Government and private institutions and residents are scheduled to participate.


Exhibition

Photographer Angelo de Mel will hold his third 'Commentaries on Living Colour' exhibition at the Colombo Art Gallery from August 28 to 30.

De Mel prefers to work in black and white as his creative medium and also still uses print film. He prefers to work with a simple camera and his subjects rarely notice themselves being photographed.


Get together

The get together of the 94/95 Arts Faculty batch of Peradeniya University will be held at Galbangalawa, University of Peradeniya, August 29, from 9 am.


Art exhibition

Ramaneeya Sithuwam an art exhibition of Kalapathi Merina Ramanee Silva will be held at the National Art Gallery from August 28 to 30.

The exhibition will open on August 28 at 10.00 a.m.
