Fresh water fish for village tanks

The Fisheries Ministry will breed fresh water fish in all village tanks and large reservoirs in the Kurunegala District during this year.

Accordingly 13.5 m fingerlings will be released into these village tanks. NWP Assistant Fisheries Director D. M. Dayasiri told Daily News that about 15,000 rural fisher families would benefit from this new program and 600,000 tons of fresh water fish harvest is expected during the next six months.

Popularising of fish consumption will minimize the levels of malnutrition among rural pregnant mothers and primary students of rural schools. This program will be expanded to other areas of the North Western Province and subsidies and necessary guidance will be provided to rural masses to carry on fishing profitably, he said.
