Uva Province progressive meeting: Attentive
President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressed the Uva Province
progressive meeting at the Uva Provincial Council Building

Additional District Secy, Colombo
Ilamathy Sabalin-gam of Sri Lanka Administrative Service assumed
duties as Additional District Secretary Colombo this month.
She has served in various capacities at district, provincial and
national ministerial levels.
She last served in the Nation Building Ministry and Economic
Development Ministry since January 2007.
Man nabbed with ammo hidden in quarry

Athurugiriya Police arrested a person who allegedly kept an artillery
ammo weighing 43 kg hidden in a metal quarry in Kottawa.
Police arrested the suspect residing at Galwalawatta, Athurugiriya
Thursday. Meanwhile, Raththota Police arrested a person in Arangala in
Nawala Police area who allegedly promised widows with marriage and stole
their jewellery.
New appointment
Youth Affairs Minister Dullas Alahapperuma appointed Dr H C Ambawatta
as the Director General, Technical Education and Training Department.
Dr Ambawatta is a product of Mahinda College, Galle and had higher
studies at Patrice Lulumba University, Russia. He functioned as the Head
of Mechanical and Production unit attached to the Engineering Faculty,
Ruhunu University from 2003 to 2010.
He was also a Senior Research Engineer attached to the National
Engineering Research and Development Centre (NERD) from 1997 to 2003.
Presentation of deeds
One thousand two hundred families living in houses belonging to the
National Housing Development Authority will receive ownership deeds at a
ceremony on September 7 at Temple Trees. The ceremony will be held under
President Mahinda Rajapaksa's patronage at 4pm.
Recipients of deeds have been selected on district basis, a
Government Information Department release said.
Car wash 2010
The annual car wash 2010, a fund-raising project organized by the
Thurstan College Junior Old Boys Union in aid of college development
activities which commenced on September 1 will continue till September
30.
All car wash ticket holders can get their vehicles washed at any Auto
Miraj Total Auto Care Points, mentioned in the ticket any time during
this period. Past Thurstanites, parents and the public could obtain
tickets from the committee of the JOBU Thurstan College swimming pool
office or Media Vice President Pubudu Hettiarachchi on 0773 976797.
Yoga workshop
The annual Yoga meditation workshop organized by the Maharagama
Sethsada Yoga Nikethanaya will be held at the Maharagama Youth Centre on
September 5 at 9 a.m. Nearly 1,500 people are expected to attend the
workshop conducted by yoga consultant and psychiatrist Chamin Warnakula.
Participants would be provided with free morning and noon meals and tea.
Those wishing to participate in practical yoga exercises are

membership.
Eid-Ul-Fitr prayers at Galle Face Green
Eid-Ul-Fitr festival prayers will be organized by the Memon
Association of Sri Lanka at 8.30 a.m. on the Eid-Ul-Fitr festival day at
the Galle Face Green.
In case of rain on the festival day, prayers will take place at the
Memon Association Hall at 320/1, Galle Road, Colombo 3.
Rotary promotes literacy in Jaffna schools
Rotarians from Colombo West and Malaysia belonging to the Federation
of Malaysians of Sri Lankan Origin (POMSO) visited Jaffna recently and
provided software, computers and TV’s to the following schools: Kopay
Christian School, Ramavil IDP School, Jaffna Kamalasani Vidyalayam,
Uduvil Girls College, Kaddudai Saiva Vidyalayam, Vaazhvaham Blind
School.
POMSO President Rotarian Dato Kulasegaran presented the computers and
TV’s and pledged their joint support to improve the educational
standards of the children and to play a part in ‘Building Communities
through Literacy’. The delegation also visited the Jaffna Public Library
to which they will present books as soon as they are received. They will
also hand over uniforms to the Principals of the respective schools, for
the children.
Mass media awards
Kelaniya University announced the award of certificates for the
Diploma holders on Mass Communication - 2010 at the University Premises
September 5. Around 55 students will receive awards.
Kelaniya University Vice Chancellor Prof. Sarath Amunugama, Human and
Social Science Faculty Dean Prof. Chandrasiri Rajapaksa, Mass
Communication Department Head Dr. Rohana Lakshman Piyadasa will also
participate. Kelaniya University Science Faculty Dean Prof Nalin De
Silva will deliver the keynote address.
Students helping Northern colleagues
A group of 140 students from Dharmaraja College Kandy have joined a
facelift and renovation program in Jaffna peninsula.
The students have started colourwashing the school buildings which
had been destroyed due to the three decade conflict.
Accordingly Nirweli School of Kopai, Muththu Thambi School, Kondawil
Adhithyar Hindu School and Thirunelwili State School were included in
the program.
Permenancy for Acting Principals

The Government has taken measures to make all acting school
principals permanent said Education Ministry officials. Those
appointments will be based on criteria such as service years as a acting
Principal, development of the school and education performance of the
school during that period. Information about those acting Principals
will be collected soon.
More power to national grid
The Power and Energy Ministry has decided to move on to low cost
renewable energy sources to add more power to the national grid as a
recourse to the prevailing power crisis, said Power and Energy Minister
Patali Champika Ranawaka.
The Minister made these observations during an inspection tour at
Hambantota Samudagama wind mill.
Death of former ANCL staffer
The death occurred of former Lake House photographer Oliver
Seneviratne after a brief illness. He was 82 at the time of his death.
Seneviratne also served the now defunct Times of Ceylon for 37 years.
Cortege leaves residence 29/13, Wavulwatte Place, off Galpotta Road,
Nawala for cremation at Borella cemetery today.
Death of Jinadasa Nissanka
Jinadasa Nissanka (71) , veteran dramatist, film actor and producer
has passed away suddenly after a brief illness. He acted in many films
including Sakwithisuwaya, Sagarayak Meda, Maha Gedara and Menik Nadiaya
Galabasee.
He had worked as the Working Director, National Film Corporation,
Media Secretary, to former North East Governor Gamini Fonseka, Chief
Producer, State Film Corporation and Manager, Cine City Cinema Complex.
He leaves wife Kumari Jayasundara, daughters Dilhani Sharika, Manjula
Perera, Manori Abeygunawardena and son Gihan Perera. His remains lie at
his residence 33/2, Weliwita , Kaduwela. The funeral will be held
September 4 at Kotalawala cemetery. State Film Corporation consultant
T.M Sanghadasa requests all artistes to attend the funeral. |
