Man nabbed with 130 ‘blue’ DVDs
A 30-year-old suspect from Meddegama, Kirindiwela was arrested by
Nugegoda Police Intelligence Unit for possessing 130 DVDs containing
pornographic material.
Rs 135,760 stolen from Avasaya
Kebetigollewa Police investigating a robbery of Rs 135,760 from the
Avasaya of the temple at Kebetigollewa D6 division arrested two suspects
and recovered a part of the loot amounting to Rs 96,000 and a motorcycle
and mobile phone used for the robbery.
Suspects in assault case further remanded

The four suspects held in connection with the alleged assault on the
Matara District Deputy Director of Inland Revenue were further remanded
till September 13. They were noticed to appear in Court on that day when
they were produced before Matara Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga
yesterday.
Buddhist talk in English
Indika Perera will deliver a Buddhist Talk in English, on “Can Kamma
Vipaka be altered?”, at a meeting of the Servants of the Buddha Society,
Maitri Hall, Lauries Road, Bambalapitiya on Saturday, September 11 at
4.30 p.m.
Rabindranath Tagore 150th Birth Anniversary
A ceremony to mark the 150th anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore, the
Indian poet, playwright, author and winner of the Nobel Prize for
Literature will be held Thursday, September 16 at the ICES Auditorium,
2, Kynsey Terrace, Colombo 8 at 5.00 p.m.
Organized by the International Centre for Ethnic Studies, the
ceremony features a lecture titled “Rabindranath Tagore: Reflections,
Relevance and Readings,” by Sharmila Kantha, an accomplished author and
wife of the Indian High Commissioner in Sri Lanka. An excerpt of poems
from “Gitanjali”, the publication which earned Rabindranath Tagore the
Noble Prize for Literature will be read by “Nethra Review.”
Managing Editor Lakmali Jayasinghe, The ceremony will end with the
screening of the film “Charulata,” one of Satyajithy Ray’s masterpieces,
based on a story by Rabindranath Tagore.
Eid-ul-Fitr
Festival Prayers
The Eid-ul-Fitr festival prayers at Galle Face Green will be
conducted at 8.30 a.m on the Edul-Fitr day and will be over at 10.00
a.m.
The prayers are conducted under the auspices of the Memon Association
of Sri Lanka annually.
Free medical clinic
A free medical clinic and blood donation campaign organised by the
Pannipitiya Dharmapala Vidyalaya Past Pupils Association Araliya Group
to mark the 146th Birth Anniversary of late Anagarika Dharmapala will be
held at the Dharmapala Vidyalaya premises on September 11 from 8 am to 4
pm.

The 34th AGM of the All Ceylon Madel owners’ Fisheries Co-operative
Society will be held at the Nuga Sevana hall, Wayamba Provincial
Fisheries Ministry compound on September 9 at 9 am. Fisheries and
Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr Rajitha Senaratne will be the
chief guest.
IET – Ex 2010 postponed
IET – EX 2010 exhibition and sale which was scheduled to be held on
September 09 – 12 has been called off indefinitely due to unavoidable
circumstances. This exhibition is organized by the Institute of
Engineering Technology of the National Apprentice and Industrial
Training Authority. The rescheduled dates for the exhibition and the
sale would be notified later.
Book launch
Joe Seneviratne’s translation of ‘Osho’s Book of Secrets’ will be
launched as a publication of Wijesuriya Books Centre at 3.30 on
September 16 at the National Library Services Council auditorium,
Independent Avenue, Colombo – 07. The book deals with the techniques of
meditation, instrumental in assisting Siddharta Gauthama to attain the
Buddhahood, A S Balasuriya and Joe Senevirathne, will speak at the
event.
Holiday for Islamic invigilators
September 10 will be a holiday for Islamic invigilators involved in
the 2010 G C E Advanced Level Examination assessment duties on account
of the Ramazan festival.
Their participation in assessment duties on September 13 will be
sufficient, the Examinations Department said in a press release. |
