Govt aims at uninterrupted development

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said that the Government’s
objective is to continue the development effort uninterrupted and leave
no room for instability.
He said that former President JR Jayewardene tried to amend his own
Constitution in the last five years of his rule without success.
President Rajapaksa said the efforts taken by former President
Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga to amend the Constitution became
fruitless.
He added that political instability at that time resulted in
deterring the development of the country.
The President was speaking at the presentation of titles to over 1300
families who received lands and houses from the National Housing
Development Authority at Temple Trees yesterday. He added that the
mandate given by the people to eradicate terrorism was fulfilled by the
Government led by him within four years and the people have entrusted
him with a responsibility of developing the country.
He said the Government is in the process of removing the impediments
that lie in the way to development. “Our main objective is to make the
people happy and Government will ensure that every family has a house”,
he added.
The President stressed that the housing problem of the people should
be solved gradually.
He said the land extent of the country would not expand though the
population is on the increase day by day. He said the people should not
think of them but the future and the well-being of their children.
