West impressed with reconciliation efforts

External Affairs Minister Prof G L Peiris returned to the island after successful official visits to Washington DC, Russia and Kazakhastan where he gained the confidence of these countries on Sri Lanka’s ongoing national reconciliation process and its efforts to find a lasting home-grown solution to the national issue.

 

President completes 42 years in politics

President Mahinda Rajapaksa today completed 42 years since becoming a Parliamentarian, having first entered Parliament as its youngest MP in 1970. President Rajapaksa was elected a Member of Parliament for the Beliatta electorate at the May 27, 1970 general election.

 

Police ban Kelaniya gold search

Police today intervened and banned people from panning for gold particles in the Kelani Ganga at Pugoda and Kumarimulla. This follows a gold rush where people flocked to the river premises town yesterday and started to pan water in search of traces of gold found in the sand in the waterway.

Police emergency call centres in the provinces

The Police Department is to decentralise operations of the 119 Police emergency call service centre while establishing emergency call centres in the provinces. “Providing an efficient and a productive service to the public is the main objective of this programme,” Inspector General of Police N K Illangakoon said.

 

Abortions under strict conditions

Sri Lanka’s abortion law is to be amended allowing abortions under strict conditions, said Child Development and Women’s Affairs Minister Tissa Karalliyadda. “The existing abortion law in Sri Lanka allows abortions only when pregnancy or child birth is life threatening to the mother.” the minister said.

 

Unite to defeat forces against SL – Sangha

The Maha Sangha led by the Mahanayaka Theras of the Malwatte and Asgiriya Chapters today called on all Sri Lankans to unite and oppose moves by local and foreign LTTE sympathisers who are planning to put forward proposals against Sri Lanka at the United Nations Human Rights sessions in Geneva.

 

Petrol price revision

The prices of several petroleum products have been increased with effect from February 11 midnight, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) said in a release.

Amnesty to 2,000 prisoners

The Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry will grant amnesty to around 2,000 prisoners who are unable to pay their fines for minor crimes or disabled and over 70 years, to mark the 64th Independence Day on February 4.

 

Ex-LTTE cadres released

[January 25 2012]

A batch of 78 rehabilitated ex-LTTE cadres were handed over to their parents and relatives at a ceremony presided by Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Chandrasiri Gajadheera, at the Batticaloa Town Hall.

 

More families resettled

[January 20 2012]

About 142 families who left their villages in 1999 due to terrorist activities were resettled in their own lands, said Resettlement Minister Gunarathna Weerakoon. These families have been settled in temporary shelters in Gajabapura and Monaraweva divisional secretariat divisions in Weli Oya.

Woman nabbed for alleged matricide

[January 16 2012]

A man who was allegedly assaulted with a broom by his wife, died at hospital while receiving treatment, the Police said. The suspect had attacked her husband with a broom following a dispute, the Police said.

Special Pinkama to mark two years of President’s second term

President Mahinda Rajapaksa attended a Bodhi Pooja Pinkama held at the Gangaramaya, Hunupitiya on Thursday to invoke blessings on him, the War Heroes and the country. The Pinkama was held to mark the President's completion of two years of the second term of office following a convincing victory at the 2010 Presidential Election.

‘Economic development, our aim’

‘Whatever the obstacles, we shall not delay opportunities for economic development’, President Mahinda Rajapaksa asserted yesterday. The President noted the above at a ceremony held in Moneragala where land deeds were handed over to more than 10,000 landless families in the Uva Wellassa area, thereby granting legal ownership of the lands they were residing in.

Omani Oil and Gas Minister Dr. Mohamed Bin Hamad Al-Rumhi yesterday stated that with a new era of peace and tranquility, Sri Lanka is ready for investors.
