School student remanded over assaulting teacher with a wicket stump

Update:The 17-year-old student of a school in Galle, who was arrested for allegedly assaulting the school’s assistant principal with a cricket stump, was remanded till January 18 after being produced at the Galle Magistrate’s Court.

An Assistant Principal of a school in Labuduwa, Galle was admitted to the Karapitiya Hospital after being attacked with a cricket stump by a 17-year-old Grade 12 student of the same school yesterday.

Investigations revealed that the student had attacked the Assistant Principal to vent his anger when he was admonished to cut his disheveled long hair and look more decent in appearance.

Hospital sources said the Assistant Principal was scheduled to undergo surgery for the injuries sustained.

Akemeemana Police took the student into custody.

The Deputy Principal contacted by the media, said he advised the student who is studying in the Arts and Commerce stream, on a disciplinary matter.

"I noticed he had a metal ring on his wrist and a hairstyle not suitable for a school boy. I told him that not to wear rings and to come to school in a proper hairstyle. The boy who disregarded my instructions approached me from behind and attacked me with a stump."
