Pension payments given for the public sector employees would not be curtailed and public sector employees would not be retrenched, said Public Administration and Management Minister Ranjith Madduma Bandara.

Although the Opposition was charging that the government is planning to curtail pension payments, the minister said that the government employees who will be appointed to the state sector from now on, will be entitled to a new pension scheme. He said this will not affect those who are presently serving in the state sector. The minister said the government's one million job opportunities programme would be launched by the ministry.

The minister made these observations at an event at Temple Trees held on Tuesday to award appointment letters to 2,592 graduates for a one year training period in different ministries and departments. Those who successfully completed the training period will be granted permanent appointment letters as Development Officers.

He said a strong government service should be available in a country to be prosperous.

Internal Affairs Minister Vajira Abeywardhene said the Establishment Code and financial acts and regulations should be revised to cater to the new era. Eligible gtaduates will be attached to the government service by the end of 2016, according to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe's instructions, the minister said. Foreign Employment Minister Thalatha Athukorala, Public Administration and Management Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame, Public Administration and Management Ministry Secretary J.Dadallage and Customs Director General Chulananda Perera were also present.
